Figment Wins Fifth Straight In Harvest Series

Figment

Figment furthered the hot start to his career with his fifth consecutive victory in the first $20,000 division of the Harvest Series first leg for three-year-old pacing males on Saturday, Nov. 8 at Woodbine Mohawk Park.

Scott Young took Figment back to fourth from post one through the :27.1 first quarter before marching the red-hot gelding to the lead on the backstretch. Figment had no opposition through the middle fractions of :56 and 1:24.3 as he and pocket-sitter Century Lucifer (Phil Hudon) slipped away from the rest. Century Lucifer reduced the gap late, but a wrapped-up Figment reached the line a three-quarter-length winner in 1:51.4. Cold Creek Pantera (Trevor Henry) finished third.

The late-blooming Figment has won six of his first seven lifetime starts with a place finish in his only defeat. The Shadow Play-Mia Seelster sophomore has earned $61,750 for owner-breeders David and Julie Keyes of Guelph, Ont. David Keyes does the training. The win price was $2.70.

National Tier rallied to the front, then found the line ahead of Strongman Hanover late to win the second Harvest Series division for pacers. Anthony Haughan slotted the gelding in fifth in a :27.1 first panel, then sent him first-up heading for the half in :56.3 before catching cover from Amberjack (Louis-Philippe Roy) nearing three-quarters in 1:25.4. National Tier split wide at the top of the lane and muscled past rivals to strike the front in late-stretch, then hung on by a head over the charging Strongman Hanover (Daryl Thiessen) to prevail in 1:53.4. Devils Wish (Travis Henry) finished third.

National Tier is now six-for-21 lifetime with $53,400 in earnings for owner Laverne Turnbull of Kitchener, Ont. Meg Crone trains the son of Betterthancheddar-Heavenly Sign. The gelding paid $9.80 to win.

Thai Tour tipped off second-over cover to upset at 32-1 the third split. The gelding got away fifth for Tyler Borth, where he sat past the quarter in :27.1 until pulling out behind Wills Watchin (Mario Baillargeon) before the half in :57.1. Thai Tour fell behind his cover but caught up at three-quarters in 1:25, pulled into clear racetrack, and steamed past pacesetter Tito N Cheddar (Tyler Jones) to win by a neck in a career-best 1:53.1. Winchester Phoenix (Jody Jamieson) closed for third.

The Mike Horner-trained Thai Tour took his fourth win in 26 lifetime outings and increased his bankroll to $50,378. RAW Equine Inc. of Burlington, Ont. and Mark Horner of St. Marys, Ont. own the gelded son of Hes Watching-Grand Tour. The win price was $66.10.

Massedonia took the faster of two Harvest Series trotting divisions for sophomore males. The gelding, driven by Tyler Borth, raced in the three-hole through :27.3, :56.4, and 1:26.4 fractions before shifting out at the bottom of the last turn. Massedonia then chipped down leader Sapphire Steve (Hudon) and reached up in the final strides for a head victory in 1:56. Florida Guy (Jody Jamieson) completed the ticket.

Massedonia is trained by Dale Fritz of Walkerton, Ont., who co-owns the gelding with Edward Acheson of Proton Station, Ont. The son of Muscle Mass-Penetangore is now seven-for-25 with a bankroll of $59,310. He returned $3 at the windows.

Trix Up My Sleeve tallied his fourth win in his past five starts as he captured the second trotting event. Young pushed the gelding forward to take the pocket that was left absent by a breaking opponent, and Trix Up My Sleeve tracked leader The Bear A Cuda (Borth) through :27.2, :57.2, and 1:27.3 splits. Trix Up My Sleeve slid out coming off the final turn and battled past The Bear A Cuda down the lane to win by 1-1/4 lengths, stopping the clock in 1:56.1. Jayport Cash (Thiessen) flew late and took second over The Bear A Cuda.

Trix Up My Sleeve has won four of 14 starts in his debut season with $56,250 in earnings for trainer Jessica Hayter. She co-owns the son of Trixton-Meadowbranch Vicki with Ed Hayter of Erin, Ont. The win payout was $8.40.

The Harvest Series is for Ontario-sired horses that are non-winners of $30,000 this year as of Sept. 30. The next leg for sophomore males is set for Nov. 15, followed by the final on Nov. 22.
