‘Sunshine’ Prevails In The Rain In Century Mile Preferred

Sunshine Boy winning at Fraser Downs

Sunshine Boy shimmered at a rain-soaked Century Mile on Saturday, Nov. 1, winning the $16,000 Preferred Handicap Pace over a sloppy track in a mild 6-1 upset.

He blasted forward into the first turn from post six to seize command for Phil Giesbrecht at the quarter in :27.3 and operated on a loose lead through :56.2 and 1:24.4 middle fractions. Giesbrecht put him to a drive to keep pocket-sitter Matteuse (Nathan Sobey) and first-over Midnight Mover (James Jungquist) at bay down the lane, and he pulled clear of them in mid-stretch. Mercedes (Jean-Francois Gagne) rushed up late, but Sunshine Boy reached home a measured neck in front in 1:54.1. Matteuse finished third.

Sunshine Boy, a regular in the Preferred ranks across Western Canada over the past few seasons, scored his second win of the year in seven tries. Justin Currie trains the gelding, who is now 36-for-106 lifetime with $353,611 in earnings. JJJ Stables of North Vancouver, B.C. and Paul Sanders of Surrey, B.C. own the seven-year-old son of Sunshine Beach-Betterfrombehind. The win price was $14.70.
