Carter Trainees Sweep Dayton Friday Features

Harness racing at Dayton Raceway

The trainer/owner combo of Steve Carter and Caldwell Mamie Racing swept the $25,352 co-features, a pair of condition claiming paces, with a pair of new stable additions on the Halloween card on Friday, Oct. 31 at Hollywood Gaming at Dayton Raceway.

In the first feature, driver Luke Hanners fired sophomore Bars And Notes off the gates wings and slid ahead of Fear The Madness (Trevor Smith) in the first turn before the opening quarter in :26.3. Honest Nation (Sam Widger) was unable to find a rail position and was forced to go the long mile first-up. Rockinpoppin (Tyler Smith) picked up Honest Nation’s cover and used it to his advantage until Honest Nation tired and he was required to go three-wide down the backstretch. The half went in :55 and the three-quarters in 1:22.3. With all of the action well behind the leader, Bars And Notes was able to use a :28 final quarter to widen his lead to 4-3/4 over Rockinpoppin at the wire Handsome Sir (Brett Miller) survived a four-way photo for third.

Bars And Notes's winning time of 1:50.3 established a new lifetime mark in his debut for his new connections off an Oct. 24 claim. The Racing Hill-Pure Note gelding, a Buckeye Stallion Series consolation winner, went over the $100,000 mark in seasonal earnings with his sixth victory in 20 starts. The favourite delivered on his 1-2 pari-mutuel promise, paying $3 to win.

In the co-feature, another Carter-trained sophomore Moons Up, driven by Brett Miller, unleashed a big third quarter move and crushed the field of nine in 1:50.4. Marvin Luna had Twenty Five on his toes as he protected his rail position past the quarter in :27.3 and half in :55.4. Moons Up, who left from post six, was used hard in the opening half-mile, racing on the outside and was finally clear of the leader before the three-quarters in 1:22.3. At the top of the stretch, the Lather Up-Walk Two Moons gelding built up a sizable lead and, thanks to a :28.1 final frame, he was able to extend his lead to 6-1/4 length at the wire. Draw Off (Pat Melloy Jr.) came from way back to edge Bet On Sunshine (Tyler Smith) for second.

A runner-up in the Buckeye consolation to Bars And Notes, Moons Up was also making his first start for Carter and company after being claimed a week ago. He was also the popular betting choice in his race and paid $3.20 to win while recording his ninth victory in 19 seasonal starts and boasting a six-figure annual income.

Carter concluded his night with a win in race 12 with Mitchell Bean and Jeremy McGraw's three-year-old trotting filly Long Armof Justice, driven by Trevor Smith. The training triple allowed the veteran conditioner to move into fourth place in the Dayton Raceway trainer standings this year.

Dayton Raceway concludes its racing week on Saturday, Nov. 1 with a 14-race card starting at 4 p.m.
