Windemere Skye Perfect Again In Maritime Breeders
Windemere Skye stayed undefeated in her rookie season with a 12th straight victory on Saturday, Oct. 25 in one of 10 Home Hardware Maritime Breeders Stakes pacing divisions at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.
Windemere Skye ($2.10) went coast-to-coast in the second $36,200 two-year-old filly division, putting up :28.4, :59, and 1:29.2 splits on the way to a 1:58.1, three-length victory over a track rated good. Going For Blood (Kenny Arsenault) was second-best, followed by Woodmere Summer (Paul Langille). Marc Campbell drove the winning filly for trainer Earl Watts and owners Windemere Farms of Springvale, P.E.I. and Matt Burke of Stratford P.E.I. The Somewhere Fancy-Howmac Missy filly has 12 wins in as many starts, including her Atlantic Breeders Crown, and has earned $124,975.
Beach Jewels ($3.10) kicked off the stakes-filled card in the first rookie filly split, controlling the tempo and sprinting home to score in 1:58.4 for driver Marc Campbell, trainer Kevin MacLean, and owner Reg MacPherson of Stratford. The Arthur Blue Chip-Preakness filly was two lengths the best over over Mattnificent Rose (Ken Murphy), with Alwaysinfullforce (Corey MacPherson) third.
Zero Two Sixty ($3.10) was all business in the first $25,200 split for two-year-old males, fronting his field and stopping the clock in 1:59 for driver David Dowling and trainer Sifroi Melanson. The Tobago Cays-J J Mistress gelding races for the Ultimate Stable of Greater Lakeburn, N.B. Streakantonio (Gilles Barrieau) was second by 1-1/2 lengths, followed by Windemere Britt (Langille).
Woodmere Kobe ($2.40) took the second rookie male contest, cutting the mile and fending off a late challenge to win in 1:57.4 for trainer-driver Arsenault and owners Peter Smith of Stratford and Gerald Morrissey of Charlottetown, P.E.I. The Tobago Cays-Princess Rusty gelding held on by a half-length over Goose Commander (Jason Hughes). Darbies Fancy (Adam Merner) completed the ticket.
Atlantic champion Sporty Anthony ($2.70) was sharp the third two-year-old colt division, wiring his rivals in 1:58 with Murphy in the bike for trainer Jason Biggar of Miscouche, P.E.I., who co-owns the son of Somewhere Fancy-Southwind Ion with Jason Williams of McNeills Mills, P.E.I. The margin was three lengths over Oceanview Lou (Brodie MacPhee), who was a half-length in front of Woodmere Mahomes (Barrieau) in third.
Badgirl Bridgette ($2.10) kept her sparkling sophomore season rolling in the first $23,650 three-year-old filly division. The Stonebridge Terror-Whatabadgirl filly took over early and remained in command to the line to post a 1:56.1 score for driver Hughes and owner-trainer Bill Lanigan of Montague, P.E.I. Mindbodyandsoul (Marc Campbell) was 1-1/2 lengths back in second with Woodmere Betcha (MacPherson) third.
Elm Grove Talia ($2.10) added another top-notch effort in the second sophomore distaff division, rallying to a 1:57.4 score under the guidance of driver-trainer Dowling. The daughter of Stonebridge Terror-Queens Or Better won by 1-1/4 lengths for owners Kingsley Walsh of Albany, P.E.I, Donald Walsh of Kinkora, P.E.I., Frank Balcom of Amherst, N.S., and Shane Baglole of Cornwall, P.E.I. Woodmere Flojo (MacPherson) got up for second over Muchtooyoungforyou (Langille).
Howmac Maleficent ($2.30) proved best in the third three-year-old filly division, dictating terms and closing it out in 1:59.1 for driver Murphy and trainer Gordie Hennessey of Bethel, P.E.I., who co-owns the daughter of Malicious-General Luckypercy with Lori Hennessey of Charlottetown and Paul-Émile Bernard of Dieppe, N.B. Woodmere Honeymoon (Merner) was beaten two lengths in second, followed by Thelastartie (Marc Campbell).
Phil My Beer ($3.70) captured the first $32,850 three-year-old colt division, making two moves to the lead early and lasting in 1:56.1 for driver Marc Campbell and trainer Landon Campbell. The Shanghai Phil-Hazel colt is owned by Brady Doyle of Stratford, Ryan MacLeod of Souris, P.E.I., Kent MacDonald of Stratford, and Brent Campbell of Charlottetown. Second was Malevolent (Langille), 1-1/2 lengths back of the winner, and third was Chromed Up (MacPherson).
Camco Lucas ($22.30) produced the afternoon’s big upset in the other group of sophomore males, out-kicking favoured Bentley (Marc Campbell) out of the pocket to prevail in 1:58.1. MacPhee engineered the winning steer for trainer Tom Weatherbie and owners Hal Smith of Pownal, P.E.I. and Ian Smith of Stratford. Bentley was three-quarters of a length back in second, with Redeyetoshanghai (Merner) third.
Windemere Saddy ($10) concluded the card with a victory in the $15,150 Atlantic Aged Pacing Mares Series Final, presented by Standardbred Canada, by three-quarters of a length in 1:56.1. She reached the winner's circle via a front-end steer by Murphy for trainer Saul Lanigan of Cambridge, P.E.I., who shares ownership with Shane Esson of Moncton, N.B., Darcy Doyle of Moncton, and Isaac Schurman of Kensington, P.E.I. Miss Dutton (Langille) was a game second with Sugar Bowl (Brady Sweet) rounding out the triactor.
