Maritime Breeders Stakes Headline Red Shores Weekend
The Maritime Breeders Association will present an afternoon of championship racing on Saturday, Oct. 25 at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park, featuring the Home Hardware Maritime Breeders Stakes for two and three-year-old pacers.
The Prince Edward Island track has an 11-dash program beginning at 12:30 p.m. (ADT), which also features the Atlantic Aged Pacing Mares Series final, presented by Standardbred Canada, in the race 11 finale.
This year’s Maritime Breeders events are sponsored by Home Hardware, represented by Peter Smith of Metro Home Building Centre and Arnold Hagen of High Tide Home Hardware Building Centre. Both longtime horsemen have deep roots in Island harness racing and remain heavily invested in the local breeding and racing industry.
“I would like to thank both gentlemen and their businesses for sponsoring the Home Hardware Maritime Breeders Stakes," said Bruce Wood, Chair of the Maritime Breeders Association, which represents the stallion owners in the Maritime provinces. "We value their partnership and are pleased to have them on-board,”
The Saturday program will open with the first of two $36,200 Home Hardware Maritime Breeders Stakes divisions for two-year-old pacing fillies. The one to beat from post seven is 5-2 morning line choice Beach Jewels, to be driven by Marc Campbell for trainer Kevin MacLean and owner Reg MacPherson. The Arthur Blue Chip-Preakness filly is a three-time winner this season with more than $50,000 in earnings.
Another division of two-year-old pacing fillies goes in race five, with Windemere Skye pegged as the 5-2 morning line favourite in post four as she seeks to cap off her perfect season with an 11-for-11 record at stake. The daughter of Somewhere Fancy out of Howmac Missy will have Marc Campbell in the seat for trainer Earl Watts and owners Windemere Farms and Matt Burke.
The first of three $25,200 Home Hardware Maritime Breeders Stakes divisions for two-year-old pacing colts and geldings is race two with Zero Two Sixty (David Dowling) slated on top at 5-2 on the morning line for trainer Sifroi Melanson and the Ultimate Stable. The Tobago Cays-J J Mistress gelding is a six-timer winner and will start from post three.
The second split for the freshman male pacers goes in race six with Woodmere Kobe as the 5-2 favourite for trainer/driver Kenny Arsenault and owners Peter Smith and Gerald Morrissey. The Tobago Cays-Princess Rusty gelding will start from post four.
Two-year-old pacing colts and geldings will also battle in race nine, where Sporty Anthony is the 5-2 favourite from post five with Ken Murphy steering for owner/trainer Jason Biggar and co-owner Jason Williams. The first of three $23,850 Home Hardware Maritime Breeders Stakes divisions for three-year-old pacing fillies is scheduled as race three, with Atlantic Breeders Crown champion Badgirl Bridgette listed as the 5-2 favourite from post five. She will have Jason Hughes in the bike for owner/trainer William Lanigan of Cambridge. The Stonebridge Terror-Watabadgirl lass has 10 wins this season and only missed the winner’s circle once in stakes action in 2025.
The second three-year-old pacing filly division goes in race seven, with Elm Grove Talia favoured at 5-2 in post six. The daughter of Stonebridge Terror and Queens Or Better is handled by trainer/driver David Dowling for owners Kingsley Walsh, Donald Walsh, Frank Balcom and Shane Baglole. Elm Grove Talia has had a sparkling season with 18 top three finishes from as many starts.
The final three-year-old pacing filly division in race 10 features Howmac Maleficent, who is listed as the 5-2 favourite from post three. Ken Murphy will drive the Malicious-General Luckypercy miss for trainer Gordie Hennessey and his co-owners, Lori Hennessey and Paul Emile Bernard.
The first of two $32,850 Home Hardware Maritime Breeders Stakes for three-year-old pacing colts and geldings will line up in race four, featuring Malevolent as the 5-2 choice from post three with Paul Langille driving for owners Debbie Francis and Rosanne Langille. A repeat Atlantic Breeders Crown champion, the Malicious-Lady Kelleigh Anne gelding will look to defend his Maritime Breeders Stakes title as well and has his sights on passing the $200,000 mark in career earnings with a victory.
In the other three-year-old pacing colt and gelding division in race eight, Bentley has the top billing at 5-2 and will start from post two with Marc Campbell driving for trainer John Clarey and owner Mike Clarey.
