Smith Takes First Driving Win

Harness racing at Flamboro Downs

Amid a career-best season as a trainer, Malik Smith has now secured his first driving victory.

The Brampton, Ont.-based horseman took the lines behind All She Can in the seventh race at Flamboro Downs on Wednesday, Oct. 22 and provided her a pocket trip. He kept the five-year-old All Bets Off-Heavenly Killean mare behind Kittys Column (Austin Sorrie) through fractions of :29.2, 1:00, and 1:28.4 before springing her to the outside entering the final turn. All She Can blew by the pacesetter and kicked away to a 3-1/2-length victory in 1:59.3. Stilton Gold (Travis Cullen) was second, followed by The Divine Miss M (Paul Davies). All She Can, trained and owned by Malik’s father, Wayne, won for the ninth time in 67 career starts. She paid $15.10 to win.

It took 10 starts in two weeks for Smith to drive his first winner after his debut on Oct. 8 at Flamboro. He is now 10-1-2-0 in the sulky. Smith is also having a strong fourth season as a trainer with 17 wins, a new personal best, and a win rate of 16.8 per cent. He is listed to drive twice more tomorrow at Flamboro, once behind his own trainee, Sees The Bay, and once behind his dad’s Always B Melman.
