Big Boys Edge Has Upper Hand In Dayton Feature

Big Boys Edge

Big Boys Edge drew away off comfortable fractions for driver Sam Widger to take the $25,352 conditioned trot feature on Tuesday, Oct. 21 at Hollywood Gaming at Dayton Raceway.

When the field of 10 was sent on its way, Big Boys Edge was hustled out of post six, received the first call, and easily cleared to the top as the rest of the group quickly went into a single-file formation. Big Boys Edge trotted through the opening panel in :28.3 and, thanks to no early challenges, was able to get a breather to the half in :59.

Rock Climber (Luke Hanners) came first-up and sprinted down the backstretch, but his challenge began to wane at three-quarters in 1:27.1. Lous Private Eye (Cameron McCown) went three-wide around the fading Rock Climber but couldn’t close much ground. Big Boys Edge then drew away from pocket-sitting favourite Beaueastel (Chris Page) by 3-3/4 lengths for the win in 1:56.4. Beaueastel was second, and Lous Private Eye claimed third.

Hartley Farms Inc. owns the winner, a five-year-old gelded son of Sharp Edge-Yourcomindown, who shipped in from Hoosier Park for Tuesday's win. Big Boys Edge, trained by Carl Newland, is five-for-20 this year and eight-for-40 lifetime with $104,870 in earnings. He paid $8.40 to win.

In a $21,127 conditioned pace, Dapper Design used an off-the-pace effort to score his third straight win and the fifth victory of his career in nine tries. There was a four-way rush for the early lead with Southern Rockfest (Luke Hanners) crossing over to the front past the opening quarter of :26.4 and putting up middle splits of :56.1 and 1:23.4. Driver Jeremy Smith sent Dapper Design three-wide past a challenging Woodrow Blue Chip (Kayne Kauffman) down the backstretch. Dapper Design cleared before the top of the stretch and drew 1-1/4 lengths ahead of another closer, Believe In Tom (Marc St. Louis Jr.) to score in 1:53.2. Woodrow Blue Chip took third over Threemargaritashot (Page).

Chris McGuire conditions the winning Heston Blue Chip-Stylish Artist colt, who is co-owned by Mike Brink and Jeffrey Clauson. The three-year-old has now earned $50,021. The win price was $3.40.

Driver Tyler Smith recorded four wins on the card. Jeremy Smith had a driving triple.

Action returns to Dayton Raceway on Wednesday with a 14-race card starting at 4 p.m.
