Merner Triples Tuesday At Mohawk

Dahlquist Hanover

Trainer Garry Merner was perfect on the Tuesday, Oct. 7 card at Woodbine Mohawk Park, sending out three winners.

Dahlquist Hanover ($10.30) set the tone for the Merner barn, blowing away his opponents in the night’s opener by 11 lengths. After taking the front at the quarter, he gradually padded his cushion throughout the mile and stopped the clock in 1:51.2 on the lifetime-best victory. James MacDonald piloted the gelding for Gino Toscani.

Toscani and Merner teamed up again in the finale with Southwind Domino ($2.50), who steamrolled off cover to score by three-quarters of a length in 1:54.1 with Jamieson at the lines. The gelding’s victory completed the conditioner’s triple.

Merner also won the fourth race with Lous Game ($6.30), who closed from sixth after hot early fractions to win by a half-length in 1:54 for driver Doug McNair. The freshman gelding broke his maiden for owner David Kryway.

Merner, coming off a career-best 77-win season, has racked up 66 victories this year. The Guelph, Ont.-based horseman is winning at a rate of 20.2 per cent in 2025, and he has recorded back-to-back campaigns with earnings of more than $1 million.
