Midnight Mover Breaks Record; Campbell Wins Six

Midnight Mover

Midnight Mover defeated top Albertan pacer Shark Week and lowered the track record for an older pacing horse at Century Mile in the $16,000 Preferred Pace over a good track on Saturday, Oct. 4.

James Jungquist slid Midnight Mover into the three-hole on the first turn while Shark Week, the overall track record holder, claimed command. Midnight Mover went on the march nearing the half in :56 and, after getting little resistance from Shark Week, stormed clear of the field on the way to three-quarters in 1:24. He was up by five lengths at that third station, but Jungquist kept his charge to task and got him home a winner in 1:50.4. Mercedes (Brandon Campbell) had the best late pace, narrowing the margin to 2-1/4 lengths in second. Matteuse (Nathan Sobey) finished third.

The 1:50.4 mile knocked four-fifths of a second off the previous mark for an aged pacing stallion established by Samba Beat in 2023. The clocking was two ticks off Shark Week’s overall record.

Midnight Mover took his sixth win of the season in 21 starts and hit the board for the ninth time in his past 10 Preferred-class outings. Travis Ellis trains the son of Mystician-Bouncing Hanover, a 17-time career winner with $136,821 in the bank in 99 starts. The eight-year-old is owned by Trevor Williams of Landmark, Man.

As the meet resumed following a host of cancellations, Brandon Campbell put on a show, winning six of the night’s 10 races. He first reached the winner’s circle in the third race, getting Ceasars Palace ($20.10) up late from well back, then won the fourth by a head with One Hot Minute ($9.70). Campbell oversaw a dominant win with Lookinlikeamillion ($5) in the gelding’s first start for Rebecca Kanak in the sixth before a triple to close proceedings. He got Rum N Custard ($5.70) and Cheyenne Creek ($10.80) home off pocket trips in the eighth and ninth, respectively, and sent Sunshine Boy ($9.40) on a first-over mission to win the finale.

Campbell, who missed time earlier this season after surgery, has won 150 of 570 starts for a win rate of 26.3 per cent in 2025. The Calgary, Alta.-based horseman is 53 wins away from 3,000 lifetime.
