Stakes-Packed Saturday Card At Red Shores

Harness Racing at Charlottetown Driving Park

The stakes spotlight will burn bright on Saturday, Oct. 4 at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park as the Lady Slipper Stakes and Joe O’Brien Memorial share centre stage.

The historic city oval presents a 13-dash program with first post time at 12:30 p.m. (ADT) and more than $270,000 in purse money up for grabs.

The Lady Slipper Stakes for three-year-old trotting fillies headlines early in the second race with a $19,950 purse. Oceanview Nikki (To be driven by Michael McGuigan) will look to add to her stellar resume as the 5-2 morning line favourite drawing post four. The E L Rocket filly has reeled off four straight wins and now takes on rivals Supreme Rockette (Gilles Barrieau) and Dusty Lane Kahlua (Adam Merner).

The colt companion split for three-year-olds in the fourth is equally contentious with Bless Me Father (Marc Campbell) pegged the top choice from the Donna Van Meer barn from post twoi ahead of Dusty Lane Gus (Merner) and Longblacklimousine (Paul Langille).

The two-year-old trotting colts meet in the sixth race for a $20,820 purse in a Lady Slipper division. Little Louis (MacPherson) has been perfect in seven straight for trainer Kuri White and he faces Mr Old Home Week (Merner) and West River Karuna (Ken MacDonald) in an eight-horse field.

The trotting fillies have their two-year-old Lady Slipper Trot division in the eighth worth $20,820, with Miss Gracie Ridge (Ambyr Campbell) the early favourite over Roseys EL Girl (Ken Murphy) and Hallysgurl (Barrieau).

The two-year-old pacing fillies go for Gold in Race 5 with $32,400 in Lady Slipper cash at stake. Beach Jewels has been installed as the 5-2 choice from post two for driver Marc Campbell and trainer Kevin MacLean, while rivals include Fitness First (Corey MacPherson) and Isle Mach Da Money (Barrieau).

Another $32,400 Gold division for rookie fillies is slated for the finale, where the undefeated Windemere Skye carries her perfect nine-for-nine record into the afternoon. The daughter of Somewhere Fancy leaves from post seven for driver Adam Merner and trainer Earl Watts in a deep field that includes Serenity Now (Jason Hughes) and Bakers Dozen (MacPherson).

The Joe O’Brien Memorial will showcase a pair of $28,500 divisions, with rail starter Zero Two Sixty (Barrieau) the 5-2 top choice in the seventh race for trainer Sifroi Melanson. Oceanview Lou (Brodie MacPhee) is a strong 4-1 selection from post three while Streakantonio (David Dowling) looms a threat from post two.

Another Gold split lines up in Race 11 for $28,500 with Disko Bay (Langille), Rollwiththewarden (MacPherson), and Sporty Anthony (Murphy) set to battle.

Grassroots divisions are also sprinkled through the program with the two-year-old pacing colts in Races 1 and 10 ($14,300 each) and the two-year-old pacing fillies in Races 3 and 9 ($16,200 each).

The Saturday showcase concludes with the $5,500 Preferred 1 Pace in Race 12 with Gold Cup and Saucer winner Miki Shan N (MacPherson) back in action. He leaves from post five for trainer Chris MacKay with his eight-race win streak on the line. Players from the Charlottetown Gaudet’s Autobody Islanders National baseball championship team will also be attendance for the afternoon.
