Summer Slash Soars To Snag Batavia Open

Pacing home like a bolt of lightning, Summer Slash got the cash in the $17,361 Fillies and Mares Open I-II Pace at Batavia Downs on Wednesday, Oct. 1.
Summer Slash (Ray Fisher Jr.) got away fifth as Won Surreal Deal (Kyle Cummings) went down the road with her five rivals in single-file formation behind her. The mare cut fractions of :28 and :57.1 before Tres Chic Bluechip (Kevin Cummings) and Gias Surreal (Drew Monti) started to advance in the outer flow, leaving Summer Slash last.
The distaffs passed three-quarters in 1:25.4 in two rows. Gias Surreal tipped three-deep around the stalled Tres Chic Bluechip on the final turn, and Summer Slash was right on her back but still sixth. Won Surreal Deal took her 1-1/2-length lead into the stretch, looking like a winner. But Summer Slash had other ideas, as she outpaced the entire field to win by a head in a four-across finish in a seasonal-best 1:55. Won Surreal Deal was second, and Gias Surreal was a quarter-length back of the winner in third.
Summer Slash ($9.96) is five-for-17 this year for owner Ilovemyharnesshorsesummer. The Ryan Swift trainee, a six-year-old Downbytheseaside-Before The Poison mare, has recorded 21 wins and $237,153 in bankroll in 80 career outings.
In the $12,222 mid-level conditioned pace for fillies and mares, Elegant Woman A (Monti) took no prisoners as she took a quick lead and marched through splits of :27.3 and :56.3 while parking Abuelita Hanover (Fisher) every step of the way. When Abuelita Hanover tired at five-eighths, Monti asked for more from Elegant Woman A, and she opened up a 1-3/4-length advantage at three-quarters in 1:26. Rightfully Mine (Kyle Swift) gave chase down the lane, but Elegant Woman A remained resolute and scored by 1-1/4 lengths in 1:54.3, matching her lifetime mark. Rightfully Mine finished second, with Mary Kat (Dave McNeight III) third.
Elegant Woman A ($5.44) is owned by Monti, in partnership with Vogel & Wags Nags LLC, Jack Rice, and Maria Rice, who also trains the winner. The five-year-old daughter of Bettors Delight-Versace Woman is an eight-time winner in 24 career outings and has earned $59,260.
Elegant Woman A was one of four winners Monti drove on the 13-race program. He also won with Medeena (1:58.4, $16.74), along with Rachelle Mungillo trainees Governor Jk (1:55.3, $5.60) and Beyond The Hill (2:01, $6.80).
Mungillo also scored with Miss Rockadali (1:57.4, $18.90) to complete her training triple, winning with all three starters on the card. She has now equalled her previous best season with 28 wins this year.
There was a huge payout in the Jackpot Super Hi-5 pentafecta in the 13th race. The single unique combination of 6-3-5-1-4 returned $6,007.28 for the 20-cent wager.
Live racing resumes at Batavia Downs on Friday, Oct. 3 with post time at 6 p.m.
