Athearn Celebrates First Driving Win

Harness racing at Cumberland Fair

Twenty-three-year-old Kyle Athearn earned his first career driving win at Cumberland Fair on Tuesday, Sept. 23.

Athearn got his first driving win aboard the Quebec-bred pacing mare GA Speed Matrix in the day's $3,600 seventh race, leading wire-to-wire in 2:01.4 and defeating favourite Eden Paige N and Aaron Hall by 1-1/4 lengths. The third choice on the tote board, GA Speed Max returned $6.80 to win. The four-year-old Windfall Blue Chip-Surprise De Mars mare is trained by Michelle Lefebvre and owned by Mlefebvre Racing.

Athearn, a resident of Cumberland, Maine who launched his driving career last year at the state fairs, is the brother of driver Matty Athearn and son of trainers Mark and Gretchen Athearn.
