Favourites Falter In Golden Rod Series Finals

The Red Mile hosted eight $69,444 Kentucky Golden Rod Series Finals on Tuesday, Sept. 16. The red clay oval was not kind to the public’s top selections, as only two managed to make it to the winner’s circle.

At odds of 72-1, Boots N Beer set a new lifetime mark of 1:51.2 in the sophomore male trot final as he closed to a one-length win. Trained and driven by Joey Putnam, the winning son of Greenshoe-Urban Legend is 26-5-7-5 lifetime and has earned $112,459. The gelding is owned by JP Racing LLC. He paid $147.74 to win.

Misspanzee (Andy Miller) had more support than her male counterpart, but the daughter of Gimpanzee-Miss Trixton was still overlooked at 17-1 in the three-year-old trotting filly final. Trained by Noel Daley, who hit the exactor with Caviart Ivy (Niko Karna) second, the filly crossed the line a half-length winner in a lifetime-best 1:52.1. Misspanzee’s career resume is 16-6-2-2, and she has earned $96,309 for owner Thaddeus Weir. She paid $37.88 to win.

Favoured Baret (Andrew McCarthy) extended her win streak to three with a 2-1/2-length victory in 1:50.1 in the sophomore filly pace final. The daughter of Bettors Delight-Sail By has a lifetime record of 20-6-6-1 and has earned $177,162. Brett Pelling trains her for Diamond Creek Racing. She paid $2.98 to her supporters.

Blue Onyx (Gingras) captured the final for three-year-old pacing males in his debut for new connections. The son of Tall Dark Stranger-Brooklyn Lilacs, now a member of the Burke Brigade, stopped the clock in 1:50.3 to win by a nose. The colt is owned by Burke Racing Stable LLC, Brad Grant, and Weaver Bruscemi LLC. His career record stands at 23-4-2-4 with a bankroll of $148,287. Blue Onyx paid $14.46 to win.

Third-choice Out The Window (Andrew McCarthy) made it three victories in a row and three-for-six overall with a 1:54.2 triumph in the final for rookie trotting fillies. The final clocking was a lifetime best for the Carter Pinske trainee, who won by 1-1/2 lengths. The daughter of Googoo Gaagaa-Sherry Lyns Lady has earned $55,413 for Pinske Stables and Andray Farm. She paid $9.40 to win.

Captain Naughty rebounded off a break in the final preliminary leg of the series to win the final for two-year-old male trotters by 3-1/2 lengths with a new speed badge of 1:53.3. The son of Captain Corey-Msnaughtyashill is trained by Justin Lloyd and was guided by Tetrick. The colt competes as a homebred for Denise Dennis, and his record is 7-4-1-0 with $70,967 in earnings. Captain Naughty paid $11.58 to win as the fourth choice.

Travis Alexander trainee Down The Line established a new lifetime mark of 1:51.3 in the final for freshman male pacers. The son of Captain Crunch-Bet Online was steered to the one-length score by Tetrick for owner Fiddler’s Creek Stables LLC. He improved his record to 7-3-0-2 and boosted his bankroll to $64,796. The gelding was 14-1 and paid $30.58 to win.

Favoured Seaside Charm, driven by Gingras, collected her third consecutive win by 2-1/2 lengths with a new mark of 1:50.4 in the contest for two-year-old filly pacers. The daughter of Downbytheseaside-Summer Charm is trained by Ron Burke for Thomas and Scott Dillon. Seaside Charm possesses a resume of 6-4-0-0 and has earned $70,756. She paid $2.70 to win.

Today’s competition was officially a wrap on another scintillating Kentucky Sire Stakes season at The Red Mile. Racing will resume with Grand Circuit action on Thursday, Sept. 25 and conclude on Sunday, Oct. 5. First post is 1 p.m.
