Trotting Fillies Shine Tuesday At Delaware

The two-year-old filly trotter Demonic Niko (Dan Noble) has proved to be the queen of the division and Monday (Sept. 15) was no different when the filly rallied for a victory in the $100,027 Ohio Breeders Championship at the Delaware County Fair in 1:56.2.

Speedbewithyou (Austin Hanners) controlled the early fractions and the field of eight until mid-stretch. Seven Lick Range (Tyler Smith) also rallied in the stretch, but came up a neck short. Speedbewithyou held on for third.

The victorious In Range filly is trained by Erv Miller, who co-owns with Anthony Lombardi and Douglas Overhiser. The win was Demonic Niko’s seventh in nine seasonal starts and pushes her earnings to $330,724.

The first $100,347 split had a pair of fillies, Rose Run Brooke (Ronnie Wrenn Jr.) and Joyofmylife As (Dan Noble) exchange the lead a couple of time in the first three-quarters of the race. Joyofmylife As make a break in stride in the final turn and Rose Run Brooke scored a 1-1/4 length win over Sarahs Mission (Chris Page). Range The Wind (Aaron Merriman) was seven lengths behind the winner.

The In Range filly is conditioned by Vernon Beachy for the First Up Racing Stable. The final time was a new lifetime mark for Rose Run Brooke.

In The End (Dan Noble) used a pocket trip and some late daylight to score a three-quarter-length win in the $81,486 second division of the Ohio Breeders Championship for sophomore filly trotters.

Jailhouse Pearl (Austin Hanners) came from post five and grabbed the lead shortly after the starting gate wings folded. The pacesetter set the early fractions of :27.4, :56.3 and 1:24.4. The eventual winner found room late in the lane and defeated Jailhouse Pearl and Dream Something (Tyler Smith).

The final lime of 1:53.4 shaved 1/5 of a second off the pervious stakes record.

Annette Lorentzon is the owner/trainer/breeder of the Lionhunter lass.

Mocha Hill (Ronnie Wrenn, Jr.) scored a mild upset at 8-1 with her gate-to-wire win the first $81,468 division. The What The Hill filly scored a one length victory over Pelican Hanover (Tyler Smith) and Mega Money (Aaron Merriman) in 1:55.

The winner is trained by Ron Burke for Burke Racing Stable, Hatfield Stables, Weaver Bruscemi & Knox Services.

A total of $194,444 was up for grabs as the Delaware County Fair hosted the fifth leg of the Buckeye Stallion Series for filly trotters. The 19-race card featured three $27,778 divisions of sophomore filly trotters and four $27,778 divisions of freshman filly trotters.

Pretty Lil Penny (Trevor Smith) won the first division of three-year-old filly trotters by a 1-1/2 lengths in 1:56.3 for trainer Jeremy Miller. Long Toms Treasure (Jason Beattie) was second followed by Sweet Rose (Chris Lems) in third. Pretty Lil Penny was in fifth place as Sweet Rose’ led at the first two calls with fractions of :28.3 and :57.3. The Marseille filly made it three wide and moved into the lead on the outside of Sweet Rose’ at the three-quarter mark in 1:27.2 en route to the victory. 

It was her second straight BSS victory, joining her win in the fourth leg in 1:56.1. She has five career wins with $88,477 in earnings and is owned by Miller and Wayne Mast Jr.

“It was a very nice effort. They made some last-minute changes on her before she went to the gate, and she dug in and beat a really nice filly,” Mast Jr. said in a post-race interview with the Ohio Harness Horsemen’s Association. “I have a really good group of trainers. I couldn’t ask for anything better.”

Pretty Lil Penny entered Monday tied for eighth in the BSS standings, making the victory an important one toward qualifying for the final.

“We were hoping for this kind of result, as we really needed a win here to get us in there (the finals),” Mast Jr. said.

In a photo finish, Sienna Sunrise (Kurt Sugg) edged Up (Lems) by a nose to win the second division in a lifetime-best 1:56.2. Aunt Lilly (Anthony MacDonald) was just a fifth of a second back in third. Up was the leader at each of the first three calls with fractions of :28.1, :57.3, and 1:26.3. Sienna Sunrise was a length back in second place entering the final stretch before using a late burst on the outside to take the narrow victory. 

The Michael Lee trainee his six lifetime wins and $131,692 in earnings. The Enterprise filly is owned by James Beluscak, Lee, Robert Carson, and Jill Dentel.

Volstarita (Justin Irvine) earned a second straight BSS victory, winning the third division in 1:55.1. The Cassandra Lecourt trainee was a winner in the fourth leg in 1:56.3 and has seven career victories. Youthful Kemp (Chris Page) led at the first two calls with fractions of :28.1 and :57.4 before Volstarita went in front. The Volstead filly led the field past the three-quarter mark in 1:26.4 en route to winning by three lengths over Youthful Kemp and Countn On Cc (Mike Wilder) in third. 

Volstarita has seven career wins and $103,852 in earnings and is owned by M3 Racing Stable.

Ranger Rosie (Tyler Angus), a 72-1 longshot, won the first division for two-year-old filly trotters by a head in a lifetime-best 1:57.4. It was the second career win for the In Range filly, who entered with a lifetime mark of 2:11.1. She paid $146.80 to win. 

Hill Of A Diva (Page) led at each of the first three calls with fractions of :29.2, :59, and 1:28.2. Ranger Rosie was in fourth place and three lengths back of the leader at the three-quarter pole but used a strong close in the passing lane down the stretch to edge Hill Of A Diva at the line. Til The End As (Dan Noble) was third. 

Ranger Rosie is trained by Miles Wollam for owner Robert Kline. She has $33,796 in career earnings.

Driven by trainer Sandy Beatty, Readi Two edged Hangtighthoney L (Hank LeVan) by a half-length at the line to win the second division in a lifetime-best 1:57.4. Hill On Heels (Tyler Smith) was third. 

It was the second BSS win of the season for the Ready For Moni filly, who also took a division in the third leg in 1:58. Hangtighthoney L was the leader past the first three calls with fractions of :28.4, :59.3, and 1:29.1. Readi Two moved second over going to the half and continued following cover to the three-quarters. She made it three wide as Mockingbird As (Noble) went off stride entering the final stretch and chased down Hangtighthoney L on the outside to take the win. 

Readi Two has hit the board in all seven seasonal starts with five wins and two seconds. She has $53,469 in earnings and is owned by Robert Sharrits.

Wild As Her As (Noble) notched her second BSS win of the season, taking the third division in 1:58.1. 

The Enterprise filly took the pocket trip behind Lacy Lucy (Austin Hanners) through the first three calls with fractions of :29, :59.4, and 1:29.1. Wild As Her As moved to the outside down the final stretch and pulled away to win by a length over Lacy Lucy. Dublins Breanna (Ronnie Wrenn Jr.) was third. 

Trained by Anette Lorentzon, Wild As Her As also took a division in the third leg of the BSS, winning in 1:57.4. She is owned by ACL Stuteri AB and has $29,810 in lifetime earnings.

Chip Shot (Wrenn Jr.) put forth a dominant effort in winning the fourth division by 10 lengths in a lifetime-best 1:56. That marked the second straight BSS win for the Vernon Beachy trainee, as the Mission Accepted filly scored a victory in the fourth leg in 1:58.2. 

Off The Rails (Tr. Smith) led at the quarter pole in :28, but it was Chip Shot out in front the rest of the way with fractions of :56.4 and 1:26.1. Chip Shot stretched a two-length lead at the three-quarter pole to seven lengths entering the final stretch en route to the victory. 

She has hit the board in five of eight starts this season with four wins and one second and has $39,373 in earnings. She is owned by John Schlabach and Walnut View Farm.
