Stakes Sophomores Repeat At The Loop Saturday

Pipers Luna

One week ago, Pipers Luna and Van Goghing Fast dominated their rivals in the first leg of the Silk Lace and Golden Boy Stakes at The Loop. On Saturday, Sept. 13, those two sophomores prevailed once again, by nearly identical margins to the previous week.

Pipers Luna ($2.70; pictured above) held up her end of that bargain, winning the $7,653 second leg of the Silk Lace again by a charted 19-1/4 lengths. Her mile time this week, however, was two-fifths of a second better as she tripped the timer in 2:00.1 with Dean Rey up. Smokinintheboysroom (Marc Fillion) and Stefs Inheritance (Paula Mason) followed the winner across the wire.

Now a winner of $32,993, Pipers Luna (Im The Pied Piper - Hammers Rainbow) sports a 6-1-0 record in seven career appearance for owner Vince Sotheran and co-owner, trainer and breeder Lorraine Rey.

Last week's Golden Boy first leg winner in 2:01, Van Goghing Fast ($3.10) would have matched both his win margin and his win time had he paced that fast on Saturday. Still impressive with a four-plus length tally, Van Goghing Fast made every call a winning one in a 2:01.1 performance, besting Wednttalkboutbruno (Dean Rey) and Austins Bud (Michel Rey).

Van Goghing Fast (Trust The Artist - Soft And Dry) is now a five-time winner this year for owner, breeder, trainer and driver Marc Fillion of St. Malo, Man., with earnings exceeding $29,000.

In the $10,200 Kindergarten Stake for two-year-old Manitoba-breds, Justcruiseonbye ($3.10) and Cory Manning had just one rival to beat, and they bested Libbys Delight (Kirk Rogers) by just over a length after cutting all the fractions in a 2:06.4 maiden-breaking effort.

Justcruiseonbye (Lambretta - Blinkanyoumissit) is a homebred owned by Manning along with Deanna Manning of Belmont, Man.

Ginger Tree Finny ($6.90) was assigned the outside post six in the $6,000 Horse & Geldings Open, but it's not where you start that matters — it's where you finish, and Ginger Tree Finny got up in the final strides for driver Michel Rey to best pacesetter Lookinlikeamillion (Richard Remillard) by a neck in 1:58.1. Flying Officer (Darryl Mason) rounded out the top trio.

Owned by Laverne Turnbull of Kitchener, Ont., Ginger Tree Finny is a seven-year-old Captaintreacherous - Ideal Weather gelding trained by Melanie Rey Clark. He's a 21-time winner from his 107 career starts with $152,480 accrued in purse earnings.

Clayton Braybrook had better faith in Tami Blue than the wagering public on Saturday afternoon, and he sent the 29-1 longest shot on the board right down the road to repel all challengers in the $6,000 Fillies & Mares Open. Holding off the late rally of Nonversation (Remillard), Tami Blue won by a quarter of a length in 1:59.4, with Outlaw Spiced Rum (Rogers) best of the rest in the show spot.

Braybook trains and owns Tami Blue (Blue Burner - Jomars Tami), who picked up her first win of the year and 17th lifetime from her 138 career outings. The winner of $81,956 returned a healthy $60.80 to win for what would appear to be a single supporter in that wager.

A runner-up last week, Controlthedistance ($4.20) topped a trio of rivals in the $5,000 Invitation, winning in 2:00.3 for Team Mason — driver Darryl and trainer Sherri. Irish Jean (Braybrook) was more than a length back in second, just better than Seek And Destroy (Paula Mason).

Five-year-old Controlthedistance (Control The Moment - Ashlees Luck) sports $68,444 in career earnings after her ninth career victory. Darryl & Sherri Mason co-own.

Chief Is Boss ($2.50) might find himself in a different class next week. the five-year-old Beren Hanover - Winters Luck gelding prevailed in a $7,500 claiming event, wiring his foes in 1:58 with Marc Fillion at the controls. The time of the mile matches the marks of P L Jackson and Outlaw Allie Oops as the fastest ever recorded at the Manitoba half-mile oval.

Trevor Williams trains Chief Is Boss for Garett Isman and Mike Williams. Chief Is Boss hasn't finished out of the top two in his four local starts, with two of his three seasonal wins coming in his two most recent outings.
