Heza Handy Man Holds On In Fritz Memorial

The 2025 season of harness racing at Hanover Raceway is now in the books, with the track featuring the Bud & Ethel Fritz Memorial Pace on Saturday, Sept. 13.
Heza Handy Man drew the rail for trainer-driver Mike Horner in the $10,000 Bud & Ethel Fritz Memorial Pace, and he controlled every call for the 10-1 upset tally. After a :27 opener, Heza Handy Man rebuffed the advances of Big Sir (Travis Henry) and then Up Joeys Credit (Samuel Fillion) through a :57.3 half and 1:27.2 third quarter before closing in a half minute flat to trip the timer 1-1/2 lengths better than that rival in a time of 1:57.2. Favoured No Plan Intended (Daryl Thiessen) couldn't find room in the stretch after a pocket trip and finished third.
Owned by co-breeder Mark Horner of St. Marys, Ont., Heza Handy Man (Big Jim - Cassidy Seelster) picked up his fifth win of the season and 41st lifetime tally in 175 starts. The eight-year-old gelding lifted his earnings to $222,565 with the victory, paying $23.70 to win.
Saturday's card also featured Leg 5A of the Prospect Series for two-year-old pacers, with a pair of $8,000 splits for fillies and a single dash for colts & geldings. Mc Princess ($2.30) was a wire-to-wire winner in 2:01 for Team McNair (driver Doug and trainer Gregg) in the first filly division, and Jalapeno Cheddar ($5.60) following that formula to victory for driver Austin Sorrie and trainer Tony Beaton in a 2:00.3 effort. Allstar Cords ($2.90) made that three on-the-engine Prospect winners, taking the single $8,000 division for male pacers in 1:59.4 for driver Steve Byron and trainer Dale Heard.
Jake Roberts topped the training standings at Hanover for 2025, leading in both wins (13) and earnings ($47,803) at the track this season.
Driver Daryl Thiessen added a pair of victories on Saturday to clinch the dash win title for the 2025 season at Hanover. Thiessen's 25 visits to the winner's circle topped Travis Henry (18) and Samuel Fillion (14). Fillion was recognized as the track's top percentage winning driver for the season.
