Rookie Fillies Shine In Mohawk Grassroots Action

Grassroot Series action continued on Monday (Sept. 8) at Woodbine Mohawk Park where the streaking Blue Jean Gal headlined a trio of $25,000 splits for two-year-old trotting fillies, while Romantic Beauty dazzled in the quickest of three $25,000 divisions for the rookie pacing fillies.
Blue Jean Gal (Pictured above) was tabbed as the 1-9 favourite in the third and final division for trotting fillies, riding a three race win streak into the night with driver Jean Bernard Renaud. Blue Jean Gal got away fourth as Canukeepasecret (Jody Jamieson) cut the quarter in :28.4. Blue Jean Gal tipped first-over just before the half in :59.1 before asserting herself and taking command at three-quarters in 1:28.4. Despite drifting off the cones in the lane, Blue Jean Gal romped by 3-1/4 lengths on the wire in 1:57.1 over Twin B Showbiz (Louis-Philippe Roy) and Canukeepasecret.
Julie Walker trains Leonard Gamble's homebred daughter of Trixton-Pine Knolls. Blue Jean Gal has now won five of seven on the year, banking $48,500.
The first split for trotting fillies was won by Belle Boubou (Trevor Henry, $4.60) in 1:57.3 for trainer Paul Reid, while Miss Mass Appeal (Doug McNair, $82.50) lit up the toteboard with a 1:57 score and the first of three wins on the night for trainer Gregg McNair.
The duo of Doug and Gregg McNair came right back in the next stakes division with Romantic Beauty and a mild 7-1 upset for pacing fillies.
Leaving from post three, McNair settled Romantic Beauty in fifth early while the 4-5 favourite, Lavender Seelster (Louis-Philippe Roy), was parked and pressing to the outside of No Better Air (Trevor Henry) through a quarter of :26.4. Romantic Beauty stuck to the cones in the middle stages while Lavender Seelster rolled through fractions of :55.1 and 1:23.2. Fillies continued to vacate the rail in the lane, giving open road for Romantic Beauty to skim the cones and surge home in :27.2 to rally by Lavender Seelster and No Better Air by 1-1/2 lengths in 1:51.4.
The victory was the second for James Avritt's homebred daughter of Bettors Delight-Precious Beauty. The clocking was a career best for Romantic Beauty who has now won two of six on the year for earnings of $29,121.
Team McNair's third win came in the finale with Patriarch Hanover ($8.90) in a 1:54.1 score against conditioned company.
The other two divisions of Grassroots for the pacing fillies were won by C J Desbi (Jean Plante, $3.70) for trainer Jacques Dupont and Chicanery (Louis-Philippe Roy, $4.70) in 1:53 for trainer Daniel Lagace.
