Global News Grabs Headlines In Hiawatha Preferred

Global News

Global News pressed on to the front early, then held on in a thrilling finish to land a 7-1 upset in the $5,200 Preferred 3 Handicap Trot at Hiawatha Horse Park on Saturday, Aug. 23.

Garrett Rooney commanded speed from the mare from post seven and kept her on the march parked-out through a :28.1 first panel to take command in front of the stands. Global News then brought the field to the half in :57.4 and came down the backstretch with a loose lead, but the first-over Monteverdi (Andy Moore) climbed towards her and gave chase through three-quarters in 1:27.

The leader turned for home with a one-length advantage, but Monteverdi was joined by Wrap And A Hooey (Natasha Day) down the stretch, with Livingitlarge (Lorne House) charging widest of all. Those three closed on the tiring leader, but Global News hung on to prevail in 1:58. Wrap And A Hooey missed by a head, and Livingitlarge got up for third over Monteverdi. The winner paid $17.60.

Global News has won two of her past three starts at the Preferred level at the Sarnia, Ont. oval. She is now four-for-19 this season. Angie Carroll of Iona, Ont. owns and trains the six-year-old daughter of Archangel-Going Global, a 21-time winner in 109 lifetime starts with $134,609 in earnings.
