Amigo Volo proved to be rather unfriendly to his five foes in the $36,000 Preferred Trot on Monday, Aug. 18 at Woodbine Mohawk Park as the classy double millionaire cruised in 1:51.3.

Driver James MacDonald had the assignment on Amigo Volo as the duo left from post five as the 4-5 favourite. Amigo Volo sprinted to the top in the early stages, trotting around Sid The Kid (Doug McNair) through a sizzling opening quarter of :26.1. MacDonald rationed Amigo Volo's speed in the middle stages, going unchallenged to the half in :55.3 before bringing the field to three-quarters in 1:24.2.

Turning for home, Sid The Kid took his shot from the pocket but Amigo Volo maintained a lead of just over a length midway through the stretch. Under minimal MacDonald urging, Amigo Volo motored home in :27.1 to win by a measured length in 1:51.3. Fashion Frenzie (Louis-Philippe Roy) staged a late rally for second, with Safe Conduct (Chris Christoforou) finishing third.

Amigo Volo has now won four of 17 races during his eight-year-old campaign for trainer Meg Crone. The 47-time career winning gelded son of Father Patrick-Margarita Momma has banked $151,031 on the season and $2.84 million lifetime for owners Pinske Stables of Plato, Minnesota and David J. Miller of Lake Mary, Florida.

In addition to the Preferred Trot, Arties Ideal and driver Billy Davis Jr. split rivals late to deliver an 83-1 shocker in the $22,000 Pop-Up Series final for horses that have started for a purse of $7,500 or less in their last three starts. Kyle Fellows trains the bomber who returned $169.40 to his backers at the windows.

Ulysses ($5.20) on the other hand scored as the 8-5 favourite in the $16,000 consolation for driver Louis-Philippe Roy and trainer Julie Walker.

While that Pop-Up Series concluded, another began on Monday night for trotters who are non-winners of $50,000 in 2025 with a lone division won by My Buddy Sam ($2.30) and Scott Young in 1:53.4 for trainer Jennifer Pinkerton.
