Fields Set For William Wellwood, Peaceful Way Stakes

Ardonne winning at Woodbine Mohawk Park

The fields were drawn for the William Wellwood Memorial and Peaceful Way following the elimination and prep races on Friday, Aug. 15 for those two Grade 1 two-year-old trotting stakes at Woodbine Mohawk Park.

Two-year-old trotting colts Magic Punk and Ardonne were both 1:54.4 winners in the $30,000 eliminations for the William Wellwood Memorial.

With Dexter Dunn catch-driving for trainer Ake Svanstedt in the first Wellwood elimination, 1-2 favourite Magic Punk ($3.10) earned his third straight win as he finished 1-3/4 lengths ahead of Greenarrow Hanover (Bob McClure), with Strobe Lite (Tyler Borth) third followed by Tavern Onthe Green (Louis-Philippe Roy) and Touchedbyanangel (Doug McNair) in fourth and fifth.

Magic Punk looped around early leader Strobe Lite down the backstretch then gave way to Greenarrow Hanover before taking off in the stretch, trotting an impressive :26.4 final quarter.

A four-time starter, the Wishing Stone-I D Entity No colt is owned by Magic Punk Inc. of Delray Beach, Florida.

In the second elimination, even-money favourite Ardonne ($4) and driver Scott Zeron closed off the cover of Cambridge Hanover (Dexter Dunn) to best that rival in a head decision for trainer Megan Scran, with First Class Mass (Jody Jamieson) rallying from the back to edge out mid-race leader Crunchintheodds (James MacDonald) more than three lengths behind while Tymal Starstruck (Doug McNair) earned the remaining spot in the final.

With a 27-second sprint to the finish, Ardonne broke his maiden in his fifth start following three straight runner-up finishes, including his last outing on Hambletonian Day in the New Jersey Sire Stakes final.

The Tactical Landing-Burberry colt is owned by Philip Steinberg of Weston, Florida.

With just 11 two-year-old trotting fillies were entered for the Peaceful Way, eliminations were not required. A $30,000 prep was carded on Friday night with seven of the entrants participating in the race won by 4-5 favourite Bingo Night ($3.90), who cleared to command at three-eighths for driver Tyler Jones and held off the pylon-skimming Calyx (Bob McClure) and pocket-popping Shimmering Hanover (Louis-Philippe Roy) by three-quarters of a length in 1:56 flat.

A two-time Ontario Sires Stakes Gold winner, Bingo Night is trained by Jones' father, Dustin. The Green Manalishi S-Cant Stop Tommi filly is now four-for-five lifetime for breeders Dustin Jones Stables Inc. of Hamilton, Ont. and Hebert Horses Inc. of Montreal, Que., and partner Sjoblom Racing of Delray Beach, Florida.
