Women Layer Sets Scioto Record

Women Layer winning at Scioto Downs

Women Layer set a new track record for four-year-old pacing geldings at Scioto Downs this past weekend.

The Virgil Morgan Jr. trainee turned in a 1:47.3 career-best performance in the $35,616 Open Pace on Saturday, Aug. 9 to shave three-fifths of a second off the former record.

Sent out from post seven by Sam Widger, Women Layer was parked three-wide through half the opening turn. Twin B Seamonster (Carson Conrad) was on top at the :26.1 quarter with Rock With JK (Cameron McCown) at wheel first-over. Through the :53.2 half, Women Layer was still parked, sitting second-over. As the field straightened out on the backside, Widger pulled Women Layer three-wide and the duo easily made the top by the 1:20.2 third quarter. Surreal Ideal (Joe Bongiorno) made a bid coming down the lane but Women Layer was a length the best at the finish. Mufferaw Joe (Shawn Barker II) was third.

Morgan trains Women Layer for owners Let It Ride Stables, Douglas Overhiser, Jeff Fought Racing and Larry Wills. The Sweet Lou gelding is out of the McArdle mare Loreenas Ruffian. The win, his 21st lifetime victory, bested his previous fastest mark of 1:49 set two starts ago at The Red Mile. Women Layer now has nine wins in 10 seasonal starts and $917,947 in lifetime earnings.

The previous Scioto record for four-year-old pacing geldings of 1:48.1 was set earlier this year by Rose Run Zane and Austin Hanners.

Racing continues at Scioto Downs on Tuesday, Aug. 12 with a 14-race card that includes five divisions of the Buckeye Stallion Series. Three freshman filly trotters — Hangtighthoney L, Joyofmylife As and Judys Moni — are looking to stay perfect in the series.
