Red Rum She Wrote Steps Up To Win Northside Feature

Red Rum She Wrote winning at Northside Downs

With a pair of heavyweights absent from this week's edition of the top level Winners Over class at Northside Downs, a new winner emerged on Saturday, July 26.

Trainer/driver Angus Bates' mare Red Rum She Wrote stepped up to win the $1,700 top class long dominated by Hugh Heff and recent newcomer Mappos Lion with both of those pacers heading to Inverness Raceway this week for Sunday's Johnny & Margaret Allan Ian Pace.

Coming off a victory last Saturday at Northside, Red Rum She Wrote was the 8-5 co-favourite with Thunder Alley, who won this class back-to-back weeks at the start of the meet before Hugh Huff's reign began.

Bates sent Red Rum She Wrote on a successful first-over journey from fifth, moving past early leader Kracken Seelster (Ardon Mofford) as they hit three-quarters in 1:27.4 and then holding off Kiss Me Im Irish (Mark Pezzarello) as the other mare in the field loomed off her cover, winning by half a length in 1:59.1. Thunder Alley (Gerard Kennedy) maneuvered between foes off a pocket trip turning for home and got up for third.

An eight-year-old daughter of Vintage Master out of So Cute Hanover, Red Rum She Wrote earned her 35th career win while improving her seasonal record to 5-1-1 from a dozen starts.

She paid $5.20 to win.
