Buckhead Ridge Bounces Back With Dominant Open Win

Buckhead Ridge, coming off two straight defeats after a streak of seven consecutive victories, resumed winning ways as he jogged in the $4,000 Open Trot on Thursday, July 24 at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.
Buckhead Ridge ($3.40), driven by Marc Campbell, scored in 1:57.1 with a front-end effort. He used :29.2 speed in the first quarter to take the lead, put up :58.3 and 1:28.2 middle fractions, and stormed away in a :28.4 final panel to win by five lengths. Fight Song (Jason Hughes), who set track records in back-to-back starts heading into the race, had to settle for second. Helpfull Princess (Adam Merner) was well back in third.
Buckhead Ridge, trained by Landon Campbell for owner Brady Doyle of Stratford, P.E.I., is now eight-for-12 on the year. The Nuncio-Tuonela gelding took his 13th lifetime win and raised his earnings to $121,827 in 47 starts.
Marc and Landon Campbell teamed up again in the 12th race to take the featured $4,200 Fillies and Mares Winners Over Pace with Get Answers ($6.50). A trip to the front-end was the winning formula for the mare, as she brushed from the back to score her first Island win for owners Doyle and Souris, P.E.I. residents Ryan and Everett MacLeod. The daughter of Lazarus N-Want Answers was fifth to the quarter in :28.1 but came first-over on early leader Tobins Brownie (Merner) approaching the half in :58. Get Answers took over at that point and retained command through three-quarters in 1:26.3, and she came home to win by three-quarters of a length in 1:55.1. Second went to Windemere Saddy (Corey MacPherson) with Tobins Brownie third.
Get Answers, who moved to P.E.I. after her June 15 start at Northfield Park, has won three of nine attempts this season. The five-year-old mare is 13-for-60 lifetime with $270,504 in earnings.
Marc Campbell also won earlier on the card with Mile Hill Gus ($3.10) in 2:03.1 for trainer Paul Morrison to complete a driving triple.
Trainer Tom Weatherbie teamed up with driver Brodie MacPhee to snag three victories on the 13-dash card. They won with Irie ($3.10) in 1:59 in Race 3, Tribal Dancer ($4.70) in 1:56.4 in the Race 6 CIBC Private Wealth Pickard Poirier Advisory Group Pace, and Talldarklatte ($7.20) in 1:57 in Race 9. Weatherbie raised his seasonal win total to 18 with Thursday's triple and is winning at an 18.9 per cent rate this year.
Isle Bea Wickedwon ($3.80) prevailed by a head in the Race 5 Ed and Marcia Johnston Memorial for driver Gilles Barrieau and trainer Ron Matheson. The time of the mile was 1:57.1.
One of the night’s biggest surprises came in the final dash as Lady Hess ($31.60) upset in 1:55.1 with Corey MacPherson in the bike for trainer Jamie Smith. MacPherson also won with Redland Peaches ($2.60) in 1:57.3 as well as Fitness First ($3.30) in a 1:57.4 score, both from his own Charlottetown stable.
Live racing continues Saturday at 4 p.m. at Red Shores Charlottetown.
