Jay Stars In Whenuwishuponastar On Shortened Card

Jay broke her maiden with an authoritative front-end score in the sole $20,000 Whenuwishuponastar Pacing Series first-leg dash for rookie fillies during a truncated card at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Thursday, July 24.
The $95,000 London Classic Yearling Sale purchase had her nose on the gate and charged out from post seven, landing on the top heading into the first turn. She provided :27.4 and :58.4 splits before facing her first challenge as Cackle Berry (Tyler Jones) fired out of fourth on the final turn. Cackle Berry pulled alongside the leader at three-quarters in 1:28, but Jay rebuffed that rival and kicked clear under confident handling by Bob McClure, cruising home to win in 1:55. Adina Hanover (Louis-Philippe Roy) soared late, pipping Cackle Berry for second.
Jay, a daughter of Cattlewash-Jan, is trained by Dr. Ian Moore for Wilma and James MacKenzie of Ennismore, Ont. and Paul Chapman of Oakville, Ont. She is one-for-three after starting her career with two Ontario Sires Stakes Gold attempts, finishing third on debut and seventh on Jul 17. She paid $4.90 to win.
Mohawk cancelled the remainder of the card after the sixth race due to unsafe track conditions caused by thunderstorms in the area. The $140,000 Ontario Sires Stakes Gold Leg 2 contest for two-year-old male trotters was scheduled as Race 7. The new date for that race will be determined on Friday, July 25.
