Shark Week Vicious Once Again

How fitting that on the eve of Discovery Channel's 2025 Shark Week, the legendary horse that spurred the name for the series was victorious once again on his home turf.
Alright, perhaps the pacing gelding doesn't win that classic game of 'Which Came First?' But the pacer named Shark Week certainly did come home first in the $16,000 Preferred Pace on Saturday, July 19 at Century Downs.
Shark Week ($2.50) had things all his own way on Saturday, leaving stoutly from post six to gain command early for driver Mike Hennessy. After fractions of :27.2 and :55.2, the 1-4 favourite repelled the first-over bid down the backside from Midnight Mover (Brandon Campbell) through a 1:24.3 third station and the sprinted home in :28.4 to trip the timer in 1:53.2. Bonus Round (David kelly) closed well for second with Midnight Mover staying for the show spot.
Rod Hennessy trains and co-owns Shark Week, a seven-year-old son of Vertical Horizon - Shark Gone Bad, along with Lorne Duffield of Edmonton, Alta. The win on Saturday, his 10th of the season and 59th lifetime, lifted his earnings over the half million dollar mark: $503,270 and counting for Alberta's apex predator.

More On Shark Week
Shark Week already has more wins and higher earnings than he had in all of 2024. The last time that he didn't race as the post time favorite was nearly 3 years ago, in August 2022. He has never raced outside of Alberta, and all but 1 of his 97 races for a purse were held at Century Mile or Century Downs.
