Starship Laska Equals Track Record In Atlantic Sires Stakes

Starship Laska winning at Summerside Raceway

Three-year-old pacing filly Starship Laska delivered a track record-equalling performance as part of a stakes triple for the Earl Watts stable in Atlantic Sires Stakes action on Friday evening, July 18 at Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway.

Starship Laska ($2.80) strutted to a record-tying performance in the first $18,080 'A' division, using gate-to-wire tactics for driver Marc Campbell. Leaving from the inside post position, the 2-5 favourite pocketed the hard-leaving Howmac Maleficent (Ken Murphy) and carved out fractions of :28.2, :57.1 and 1:25.3 en route to the 1:54.4 score. She tied the three-year-old pacing filly track record set by JJ Scarlett in 2022 and equalled by Rosetown Mary in 2023.

Howmac Maleficent followed two lengths behind in second while Tobins Dream (David Dowling) rounded out the triactor.

The daughter of Arthur Blue Chip out of American Chocolate races for the Prince Edward Island ownership group of Windemere Farms of Springvale, Beryl McNeill of Cornwall, Sterling Buchanan of Bonshaw and Jack Quinn of Charlottetown. Unraced as a two-year-old, she now has three wins in eight starts.

Starship Laska's win highlighted an Atlantic Sires Stakes triple for trainer Earl Watts, who also took two $6,000 'B' divisions with Windemereontheline ($5.90) nosing out the favoured Lorne Valley Liv in 1:59 and Windemere Classie ($2.10) continuing her winning ways with an effortless 1:58.2 score by more than five lengths. Campbell also drove those winners as part of a driving grand slam on the 11-race card.

Badgirl Bridgette ($2.10) kept her perfect Atlantic Sires Stakes record in tact with a first-over assault out of third at the midway mark in the second 'A' division then took a brief tuck around the final turn and collared leader Elm Grove Talia (David Dowling) through a blistering :27.4 closing quarter to win by half a length in 1:55 flat. Jason Hughes engineered the winning trip for trainer and owner William Lanigan of Montague, P.E.I.

Elm Grove Talia (Dowling) cut the mile with fractions of :29.3, :59 and 1:27, but had to settle for second behind the 1-9 bettors' choice while Lady Llamrei (Adam Merner) was a solid third.

A daughter of Stonebridge Terror out of Whatabadgirl, Badgirl Bridgette is just a nose shy of a perfect seasonal record in five starts and is now 10-for-12 lifetime.

The other 'B' division was won by Jafetica ($3), who controlled the race from the outset and held on by a quarter-length in 1:58 with Myles Heffernan Sr. in the bike for trainer Myles Heffernan Jr.

The $2,850 Bud Ramsay Memorial was claimed by four-year-old pacing mare Sensational Gal ($3.20), who equalled her lifetime mark of 1:56 in line to Norris Rogers for trainer Nick Oakes.
