Overalls Stays Perfect With NYSS Romp

The expected showdown between Overalls and My Philomene in the $150,959 New York Sire Stakes for the two-year-old filly trotters at Buffalo Raceway on Wednesday, July 2 never materialized. But the fizzled-out battle didn't bother Overalls one bit as she went gate-to-wire in producing a 3-1/2 length victory over Sharp Seven in 2:00.3.
With Overalls (Jordan Stratton) and My Philomene (Jason Bartlett) both registering impressive coast-to-coast victories in their first career starts in the NYSS at Monticello Raceway on June 23, the hopeful clash evaporated around the first turn.
Overalls ($5.60) took the early lead, but My Philomene went off stride midway around the first turn, quickly dashing her hopes. With that unfortunate bobble, Overalls took full advantage and was able to trot smartly on the front end, notching fractions of :31, 1:01.3 and 1:32 on the fast track.
A threatening Trinitys Diamond (Todd Ratchford) was sitting in the pocket turning for home, but she jumped it off, allowing Overalls to easily romp home to the win. Sharp Seven (Jeff Gregory) rallied for second place honours with Makeittothebell (Brett Beckwith) taking third.
Co-owned by Our Three Sons Stable LLC, the Stratton Stable Inc., and VIP Internet Stable LLC, Overalls (Devious Man-Over Joyed) scored her second win in as many trips. With the tidy sum of $75,479 earned for the score, the Cory Stratton-trained Overalls has put $112,123 in the bank in just two lifetime races.
In the $27,397 Excelsior Series race for the two-year-old lady trotters, Saparilla Sal ($11.20) was able to hold off a late bid from SC Thats My Wife (Cory Stratton) to notch the three-length victory in 2:03.2.
It was a survival of the fittest as Saparilla Sal (Dan Daley) and SC Thats My Wife were the only two able to cleanly get around the first turn. It was a two-horse breakaway as Saparilla Sal set the tone with splits of :32, 1:04, and 1:34.1. Things got dicey in the lane as SC Thats My Wife was able to cut the margin to a length with a bid on the outside in mid-stretch, but Saparilla Sal found some late kick to pull away for the three-length win. My Girl Charlie (Gregory) picked up the show cheque.
Co-owned by Ann-Mari Daley, Gage Marshall, and Jlrl LLC, Saparilla Sal (Devious Man-Miss Conway) broke her maiden in her second start. The score put $13,699 in the Dan Daley-trained filly's account.
On the day, David McNeight III and Drew Monti completed the program with driving hat tricks with Kevin Cummings and Mike Baumeister posting doubles. Trainers Samuel Smith and Jacob Baumeister had two wins each.
Racing will return on Friday afternoon with a 12-race card set for 2:30 p.m.
