Thatswhatisaid N Worst To First Pop-Up Winner At Mohawk

The second leg of the Pop-up Series for $8,000 claiming horses and geldings split into two divisions, with Thatswhatisaid N and Nevada Dragon triumphing in twin 1:53.4 miles.
A slow start from post seven didn’t deter Thatswhatisaid N ($8.10), who went from last in the eight horse field to the winners circle in 1:53.4. Following a :27 first quarter, driver Billy Davis, Jr. tipped halfway down the backside, quickly picking up cover from 4-5 favourite A J Morelli (James MacDonald) who would go on to finish second. The tandem continued to climb past a :56.1 half, with A J Morelli drawing even with leader Beach Cowboy (Jonathan Drury) in time for a 1:24.4 third quarter. Davis tipped once more at the top of the stretch, using a three-wide move to give eleven-year-old Thatswhatisaid N his 45th career victory in 166 starts.
Janaya Gallant of Kitchener, Ont. owns and trains the Well Said gelding who has now amassed $338,556 in lifetime earnings.
The second division served as the evening’s curtain call, with Nevada Dragon (Louis-Philippe Roy) setting a new lifetime mark of 1:53.4.
Roy and 3-5 favourite Nevada Dragon ($3.40) got away third and rode the rail past :26.4, :55.4, and 1:24.3 fractions, and continued to hug the inside through the stretch. The four-year-old Custard The Dragon gelding found room up the inside late and couldn't be caught, scoring his fourth win in 46 career starts. Passionate Prince (Damian MacLellan) and Trident Seelster (Austin Sorrie) rounded out the podium.
Trained by Mike Kwietniowski and owned by Robert Jones of Stony Plain, Alta., Nevada Dragon’s bankroll now inflates to $67,317.
The $16,000 finale of this Pop-Up Series is set for next Tuesday, July 8.
