Th Check me out

Trainer Blake MacIntosh took two of three Tompkins-Geers Stakes divisions on Thursday, June 26 as Woodbine Mohawk Park played host to the first two-year-old Grand Circuit action of 2025.

Rookie fillies took part in three Tompkins-Geers splits with two for trotters and one for pacers.

MacIntosh trainee Th Check Me Out stormed home in :26.3 to win the $56,350 Tompkins-Geers for two-year-old pacing fillies.

Driven by Tyler Borth, Th Check Me Out got away fourth in a :28 first panel and would follow a rotation to the lead, touching down on the front ahead of a :57.2 half. She led the field to three-quarters in 1:26, holding the lead over co-favourite A Bets A Bet (Scott Young). In the stretch, the two favourites pulled away from the rest of the pack, with Th Check Me Out holding A Bets A Bet back by 1-1/2 lengths for the 1:52.3 victory. Lds Kimberly (James MacDonald) was well back in third. The winner returned $4.10.

A $44,444 Standardbred Horse Sale yearling purchase, Th Check Me Out is now two-for-two to start her career after winning Mohawk’s first two-year-old race of the season on June 13. She’s owned by Ozzie Mackay of Moncton, N.B., MacIntosh of St. George, Ont., Gilles Landry of Dieppe, N.B., and James Giannuzzi of Fayetteville, N.Y.

“You never know what they’re going to do first time on the front,” said MacIntosh of the Cattlewash-Sports Check filly. “She’s been following along and hasn’t been on the front other than training and she kicked home good, so we’re happy.”

A Splash Of Green gave trainer MacIntosh two wins in the Tompkins-Geers and three overall for Thursday’s card with a victory in the $27,200 second trotting division.

A Splash Of Green strode out to the lead for MacDonald and never looked back in a dominant 1:56.1 win. The daughter of Green Manalishi S-Allmar Victory posted fractions of :29, :59.2 and 1:28.1 prior to a :28 kicker for the 4-1/4-length victory. Canukeepasecret (Jody Jamieson) followed in second throughout and just held that spot over Cupid Hall (Rick Zeron). The win price was $4.90.

A $55,000 London Classic Yearling Sale purchase, A Splash Of Green was making her career debut Thursday after three qualifiers, which included a break in the second outing.

“She’s been great, she just rolled off on me the second time,” said MacDonald. “Last week Blake had her fixed up. and again tonight she was just sensational and tons of trot left finishing, so that’s exactly how you want to start their career.”

A Splash Of Green is owned by Tim Klemencic of Trenton, Ont., MacIntosh, Andy Klemencic of Vernon, B.C., and Chris Storms of Picton, Ont.

The $27,200 first Tompkins-Geers split for two-year-old trotting fillies went to Ill Have The Red, who rocketed home in her career debut for trainer/driver Rick Zeron.

A daughter of Chapter Seven-Shishito, Ill Have The Red went off as the 4/5 favourite after an impressive 1:58.4 victory in her lone qualifying attempt on June 12. Sitting a gapped-out third through fractions of :28.2, :59, and 1:28.3, Ill Have The Red unleashed a furious stretch kick to split rivals and win by 2-1/2 lengths in 1:57. Pocket-sitter I Take The Cake (Jamieson) finished second, followed by pacesetter Walners Grove (Doug McNair). A $2 win ticket on Ill Have The Red returned $3.90.

“I don’t think the performance was really all that great,” said Zeron. “She went into the first turn tonight and decided to start bearing in on me, and I had to watch myself coming out of the turn and I lost about 10 or 12 lengths. And then she did it again around the last turn and I lost about another five lengths. Then at the head of the stretch I yelled at her and said ‘it’s time to go,’ and off she went.”

Despite the turn trouble, Zeron noted the $94,595 Lexington Selected Yearling Sale purchase has big talent.

“She can fly, can outright fly… just some little thing is bothering her this week and I’ll have [Dr.] Hennessey come in and have a look at her and we’ll straighten it out.”

Ill Have The Red is owned by Rick Zeron Stables of Oakville, Ont., James Walker of Port Perry, Ont., and Johnny Marvento of Montreal, Que.

Outside of Thursday’s Tompkins-Geers, the two-year-old filly Sugar Packet turned heads with a 1:55.3 victory as one of three wins for MacIntosh on the night. The daughter of Six Pack-Sugarcane Yankee was making her career debut and was driven by Jamieson. Sugar Packet was a $14,865 Lexington Selected Yearling Sale purchase and is now the fastest two-year-old filly trotter in North America this season. She’s owned by MacIntosh, Mackay and Bay Pond Racing Stable of Malvern, Pa.

Trainer Austin McEneny celebrated his first career win on the card as Eternal Delight crushed in the fourth race. The filly, who has hit the board in two Ontario Sires Stakes Grassroots starts this season, fired first-over from fourth on the final turn to take the lead at the top of the lane, and she soared away to a 5-1/2-length win in 1:53.1, a new career best. Trevor Henry piloted the sophomore for owners Marwest Racing Lp of Mississauga Ont., Cantucky Farm Inc. of Innisfil, Ont., and Innisfil residents Jeffery and Terry Ruch.

McEneny debuted last month and has made all six starts with Eternal Delight. The 28-year-old conditioner now has a win, two seconds, and two show finishes for a UTRS of .462. He is a former pro hockey player with extended stints in the East Coast Hockey League and Ontario Hockey League.

There were also two $10,000 first-leg Pop-Up Series contests on the card for $8,000 claiming fillies and mares that are non-winners of $5,000 in their past five starts. Hillbilly Jet ($3.60) took the first split in 1:53.2, and Grand Circuit ($3.60) romped in the second in 1:52.4.
