Martz Seven Muscles To INSS Score; First Win For Yoder

Martz Seven

Defending Indiana Sire Stakes champion Martz Seven steamrolled first-over to pull a mild 4-1 upset in the lone $131,507 dash of leg three of the Indiana Sire Stakes for sophomore trotting fillies, which highlighted the 14-race card on Tuesday, June 24 at Harrah’s Hoosier Park.

Leaving from post two in the field of eight, Martz Seven got away third in the early stages, just behind the first turn skirmish between Ponda Fashion (Kyle Wilfong) and 1-2 favourite Better Takem (Jordan Ross) to a quarter of :27.2. Better Takem cleared on the backstretch but faced immediate pressure from 29-1 shot Woodside Izz (LeWayne Miller), whom the favourite released to the lead at the half in :56.1. Luna turned Martz Seven loose first-over from fourth on the final turn, taking the tiring longshot leader to task through three-quarters in 1:25.1 with Classical Jane (Trace Tetrick) on her back and Better Takem pinned behind the sputtering Woodside Izz.

Turning for home, Martz Seven powered clear with authority, opening up on the field of fillies behind her. Motoring home in :27.3, Martz Seven was a wrapped-up winner in 1:53 by 2-3/4 lengths over Classical Jane, with Better Takem skirting up the cones late to be third.

The clocking was a career best for Martz Seven, who is trained by Walter Haynes Jr. for owners Stephen Stoll and Black & White Stable. Bred by Martz Creek Farm and Roman Stoll, the daughter of Swan For All-La Mirada has won two of four races at age three, and five times overall for her career in 15 starts with a lifetime bankroll of $366,608. She returned $10.80 to win.

Trainer Daniel Yoder recorded his first pari-mutuel victory as he won the third race with Seven Lick Tom. He owns and trains the Long Tom-Radiant Beam gelding, who earned the first win of his three-year-old campaign in 1:58.3 with Wilfong driving. Yoder made his debut last season and raced exclusively at Indiana fairs before beginning this season at Hoosier Park. The Montgomery, Ind. resident is now 1-1-6 in 22 starts.

Wilfong celebrated his birthday by winning the first four races on the night as part of a five-win performance for the reinsman who sits second in the Hoosier Park drivers standings. He took the opener with Risky Endeavor ($4.40), the second race with Pastors Delicacy ($5.80), combined with Yoder on Seven Lick Tom ($5.40) in Race 3, and made it four straight with Kid Tyler ($4.60) in the fourth. Wilfong added the fifth win in Race 10 with Away We Go A ($2.10).

Trace Tetrick, Brad Ferguson, Mike Peterson, and Marvin Luna each had driving doubles on the night.

A slew of prices in the second half of the card created a trio of carryovers that will carry into the Wednesday action. The Early Pick 5 (Races 1-5) will feature a carryover of $3,208 with that pool guaranteed at $15,000. A double-carryover Pick 4 on Tuesday means the Early Pick 4 on Wednesday will feature $21,298 of dead money with that pool being guaranteed at $75,000. Additionally, the Late Pick 4 (races 10-13) and Late Hoosier High 5 (race 13) are guaranteed at $10,000, with the guarantees done in partnership with the USTA’s Strategic Wagering Program. First post for the Wednesday night program is 6:15 p.m.
