Unbeaten Women Layer Completes KYSS Sweep

Women Layer

Virgil Morgan Jr. trainee Women Layer completed a full sweep of Kentucky Sire Stakes (KYSS) action at Oak Grove, winning in every prelim of both series as well as in both finals when he capped the second series for four-year-old pacing males with a 1:49.2 stroll in the $205,479 Final on Tuesday, June 24 to remain unbeaten from seven starts this season.

Driver Todd McCarthy circled Women Layer to the top past early leader Lou Hill (Dexter Dunn) through a :27 first quarter and jogged to a :55 half. He accelerated up the backstretch to clock three-quarters in 1:22.3 and took flight off the bottom corner before gearing down to the finish en route to a three-length victory. Lou Hill finished second with Nuclear (Dave Miller) rallying for third, another 4-3/4 lengths behind.

Women Layer, a gelded son of Sweet Lou-Loreenas Ruffian, has now won 19 times from 28 starts and banked $866,791. He is owned by Let It Ride Stables Inc., Douglas Overhiser, Jeff Fought Racing, and Larry Wills. He paid $2.10 to win.

Bath Bomb (Andy McCarthy) may not have uncorked a perfect sweep like Women Layer, but the Per Engblom trainee did register back-to-back wins in KYSS Finals when she strolled to a 1:50.2 victory in the $205,479 final for four-year-old pacing mares. McCarthy grabbed command with Bath Bomb past a :26.1 first quarter to pocket Asweetbeachhere (Todd McCarthy) and stayed steady on the motor to a :55 half and 1:22.3 three-quarters. Bath Bomb spun for home on a confident lead and crossed the finish 2-1/2 lengths better than Peace Talks (Dexter Dunn), who ripped off a ground-saving trip to snag second from Asweetbeachhere in third.

A daughter of Lather Up-Sangaal, Bath Bomb has now won 10 races from 23 starts and earned $481,824 for owner Morrison Racing Stables. She paid $2.74 to win in her seventh tally in eight outings this year.

Pennteller Hanover (Brett MacDonald) capitalized on several breaking rivals to go down the road with a 1:53 effort and win the $205,479 KYSS Final for four-year-old trotting horses and geldings. With favourites Convoy Hall (Todd McCarthy) and Ways N Means (Andy McCarthy) out of contention following breaks behind the gate, MacDonald sent Pennteller Hanover forward and took over command from Ordained (Yannick Gingras) after a :27.4 first quarter. Pennteller Hanover glided through middle sectionals of :56.2 and 1:24.4 and then sailed home a four-length winner under wraps with Mister Dad (Dunn) taking second. Toms Muscle (Ernie Hendry) rallied for third.

Luc Blais trains Pennteller Hanover, a gelding by Chapter Seven-Possess The Magic, for owner Determination. The gelding won his seventh race from 16 starts and has now earned $222,536. The five-time winner in 11 outings this season paid $10.40 to win.

Black Velvet As (Dunn) posted the shocker of the afternoon when she upended defending champion Woman Of Passion (Todd McCarthy) to score at 14-1 in the $205,479 KYSS Final for four-year-old trotting mares. Dunn secured a pocket trip for Black Velvet As when pushing forward through a :27.1 quarter to plant onto the lead before Woman Of Passion completed her brush for the front. Woman Of Passion cleared just before a :55.4 half and tried to stay on the muscle while marching to three-quarters in 1:24.1. She opened up a two-length lead on the turn for home, but Black Velvet As gathered momentum and easily charged by to win by a length over Woman Of Passion in 1:52.4. Social Chatter (Matt Krueger) saved ground for third.

Anette Lorentzon trains Black Velvet As, a daughter of Archangel-Provide As, for owner-breeder ACL Stuteri AB. Black Velvet As won her sixth race from 23 starts, good for $333,158 in earnings, and returned $30.28 to win. She is now three-for-nine this year.

Oak Grove also hosted nine $54,795 first round preliminary splits of KYSS — three for each division — for pacing three-year-old males, three-year-old trotting colts and geldings, and sophomore pacing fillies with a pair of new track records coming from two divisions.

The day opened with Harrisburg Heist (Gingras, $3.72) setting a track record for three-year-old pacing geldings with a 1:49.1 win by 4-1/4 lengths over Making History (Todd McCarthy) after circling to the top past the first quarter. Special Select (Atlee Bender) was third. Ron Burke trains the winning son of Downbytheseaside-Cashaway for owners Burke Racing Stable LLC, Knox Services Inc., Phillip Collura, and Weaver Bruscemi LLC. It was the gelding's fifth career win in 16 appearances. His 1:49.1 mile is also the fastest all-time performance by a pacing three-year-old at Oak Grove, a mark held previously by Tip Top Cat when he won the KYSS final in 2023 with a 1:49.3 mile.

Yo Sheldon ($3.64) then equaled the record for a sophomore trotting gelding when he collared Herecomesdajudge (Andy Miller) in deep-stretch for owner-trainer-driver Verlin Yoder to win by a half-length in 1:53.1 in his division's first split. Pocket-sitter Onemore Volo (Andy McCarthy) finished third. The winning son of Love You-Miro Mountain also lowered his lifetime mark as he improved his career record to nine-for-17. He matched the standard set by Bank On Me (established when winning an overnight on May 20 this year), but he wouldn't be in the record books for long.

Later in the day, the Julie Miller trainee My Degenerate (Andy Miller, $11.88) established a new mark for three-year-old trotting geldings when he popped the pocket on tempo-setter Bank On Me (David Miller) in the stretch to post a 1:53 victory by 1-3/4 lengths in the second division. Yannick G Kemp (Todd McCarthy) came on for second over Bank On Me, who was third. My Degenerate, a gelding by Muscle Hill-Decadence, competes for owners Knutsson Trotting Inc., Little E LLC, Lindy Farms of Connecticut, and Andy Miller Stable Inc. He bested the previous tied mark of 1:53.1 held both by Bank On Me and Yo Sheldon as he earned his third win in 15 career starts.

Odds On Chesapeake (Dunn, $2.48) led her peers with the top performance of the three splits for three-year-old pacing fillies when she romped by seven lengths in a 1:50.1 mile. Accede (Gingras) was best of the rest, followed by Wunderkindbluechip (Bender). Virgil Morgan Jr. trains the victorious daughter of Downbytheseaside-Macaroon, who circled to the lead past the quarter and rolled under wraps to the finish for owner Odds On Racing. She is now eight-for-14 lifetime.

Falcon (Marcus Miller, $79.04) unleashed a major kick final eighth of a mile to land a huge upset in the second group of pacing males, scoring in 1:50.4 by 2-1/4 lengths. Handsome Stranger (Andy McCarthy) also closed off strong fractions to nab Bourbon County (Todd McCarthy) for second. Falcon, a Captain Crunch-Blood Red gelding, is trained by Robert Taylor for Taylor Racing LLC and Tristan Taylor. He has won five of 14 career starts.

Ayeaye Captain Deo (Todd McCarthy, $2.10) captured the final division for pacing colts and geldings, wiring his rivals in 1:50.1. Brigade (Gingras) was second by 2-1/2 lengths with Boomerang (MacDonald) third. Trained by Garry Merner for Gino Toscani, the Captaintreacherous-Oceania colt has won six of 14 lifetime races.

Te Quiero Lindy (Andy Miller, $23.10) delivered a strong rebuke of public opinion as the 10-1 shot dominated the third division for trotting males, beating favourite Big Shoes (Gingras) by 2-1/4 lengths in 1:53.2 with Global Sensation (Dunn) completing the ticket. Te Quiero Lindy, a son of Walner-Adios Lindy, has won five of 15 career appearances for trainer Julie Miller. The gelding is owned by Andy Miller Stable Inc., Patrick Hoopes, and Lindy Farms of Connecticut.

Reckless Abandon (Todd McCarthy, $5.94) held on by a head over the favoured Unreasonable (Marcus Miller) to take the second pacing filly division in 1:51. Caviart Delight (Scott Zeron) took the show cheque. The Morgan-trained winner, a daughter of Cattlewash-Reclamation, is now five-for-12 lifetime for owner/breeders W.J. Donovan and Donal Murphy. That victory completed a triple on the 15-race card for Morgan.

Baret (Andy McCarthy, $5.70) bagged the final distaff division, closing to win by three-quarters of a length in 1:52.3 over Treacheryinthedark (Todd McCarthy) and Duration (Zeron), who were second and third, respectively. Baret, a Bettors Delight-Sail By homebred for Brittany Farms LLC, has won three of 13 career outings for trainer Tony Alagna.

Tuesday's card also featured a pair of Open events for pacers. Tip Top Cat (Gingras, $5.76) powered off a second-over trip and ground down the first-up Saulsbrook Victor (MacDonald) along with pacesetter Later Dudes (Dunn) to win the $49,315 Open Pace by a neck in 1:51. The latter two were second and third, respectively. Ron Burke trains the winning five-year-old Always B Miki-Western Top Cat gelding for owners Burke Racing Stable LLC, Weaver Bruscemi LLC, Frank Canzone, and Larry Karr. Western Era (Bender, $4.36) later strolled to a front-stepping 1:51.3 win in the $35,616 Open 2 Pace. Erv Miller trains the six-year-old JK Endofanera-Western Charmer gelding for owners Ervin Miller Stable Inc. and Robert McCormick. Out To Get Lucky (Tony Dinges) held off Great Seats (Wyatt Avenatti) for second.

Andrew McCarthy's KYSS Final win behind Bath Bomb propelled him past the $90 million earnings milestone. The Australian ex-pat moved to the United States in 2007 and has since racked up 3,742 wins in 28,235 starts. He had his best North American year last season with more than $10.5 million in earnings.

Racing continues at Oak Grove on Wednesday at an earlier post time of 11:25 a.m. (CDT). Wednesday's card will also feature a $1,768.92 carryover in the 20-cent Pick 5, which starts in Race 4.
