Fashion Frenzie Ties Canadian Trotting Record

Fashion Frenzie

Fashion Frenzie became the co-fastest trotter in Canadian harness racing history on Monday, June 16 at Woodbine Mohawk Park as he upset at 11-1 in the $36,000 Preferred.

He was fastest away for Louis-Philippe Roy from post five but accepted the pocket as Osceola (Doug McNair) pushed forward to lead to the quarter in :26.4. McNair maintained a moderate tempo to the half in :55.3, and the field traveled in single-file formation into the final bend.

Sid The Kid (James MacDonald) shifted out of third approaching three-quarters in 1:23.2 and was followed by 3-5 favourite Gaines Hanover (Bob McClure), a co-owner of Canada’s trotting record. Fashion Frenzie was locked in the pocket coming down the lane with Sid The Kid spinning his tires on the outside, but Osceola drifted on the cones in mid-stretch. Fashion Frenzie, with his newfound room, powered past a tough Osceola to win by three-quarters of a length and stop the clock in 1:50.2. Osceola was second over the closing Gaines Hanover.

Fashion Frenzie joined star-studded company with his record performance. The mark was set initially by Atlanta in 2019, equalled by Alrajah One It in 2023, and matched again by Gaines Hanover in 2024. Emoticon Legacy was the latest to tie the 1:50.2 mark as the three-year-old won the Goodtimes Stakes on Saturday.

Fashion Frenzie, a two-time O’Brien Award winner, has racked up 30 wins and $1,371,347 in earnings in 64 career starts. The seven-year-old, by Archangel out of Striking Fashion, is trained by Eric Nadeau for the Becancour, Que.-based owners Ecurie Francis Richard, Pierre Gillemette, and Sylvain Richard, along with Gestion Mario Bourgea of Stanbridge-East, Que. He is three-for-seven this season. Saturday’s time was also a new lifetime best. His backers received $25.70 for a $2 base.

The Murray Brethour barn starred in the Ontario Sires Stakes Grassroots second leg for three-year-old pacing fillies as his trainees took the fastest two of four $25,000 divisions.

Foreverafterall crushed the first split for driver James MacDonald. She took the front at the quarter in :26.3, performed a give-and-go before the half in :55.2, led to three-quarters in 1:23.3, and kicked clear down the stretch to win by 4-3/4 lengths in 1:50.3. Darlenes Angel (Tyler Borth) closed from last at three-quarters to finish second. Eternal Delight (Trevor Henry) got up for show.

Foreverafterall is two-for-two in the Grassroots this season and four-for-six overall. The daughter of Stag Party-Watchful Eye has earned $63,160 and won five of 13 lifetime outings for owner Brian Stephen Scott of Douro-Drummer, Ont. She returned $3 to win.

Windsun Charlotte then matched her stablemate in the second division as she closed down a loose leader for the win. She raced third behind Pick Me Up Hanover (Trevor Henry) through blistering :26.3, :54.1, and 1:21.4 fractions as Oceanside Magic (Doug McNair) tried to bottom out the field. Windsun Charlotte and Pick Me Up Hanover started to cut down the lead on the final turn and swallowed up Oceanside Magic in the last eighth of a mile. Windsun Charlotte then out-kicked her rival to the line to score by a length in 1:50.3. Pick Me Up Hanover had to settle for place, followed by All My Wishes (MacDonald)

The win was Windsun Charlotte’s first of the season in five tries. She knocked four seconds off her previous mark with the victory. The Betterthancheddar-Windsun Chanel miss has won three of 15 lifetime appearances and earned $43,482 for owner/breeder Windsun Farm of Uxbridge, Ont. Her win price was $19.30.

Promising Moment captured the third group in a 29-1 upset. The Control The Moment-Unspoken Promise filly rallied out of fifth for Jody Jamieson at the top of the lane and rolled past four rivals to win by 1-1/4 lengths in 1:51.1, a new lifetime mark. Manhattan Mayhem (McClure) surged late for second with Macapelo Seelster (Borth) third.

The winner, a homebred for Howard Taylor and Falcon Racing, is trained by Susie Kerwood. She has visited the winner’s circle five times in 17 outings. She paid $61.80 to win.

Sugar Pie Honey went back-to-back in the Grassroots as she romped in the final group. The daughter of Bettors Delight-Kloof Street brushed from fifth to first on the backside for MacDonald and left her rivals behind, soaring away down the stretch and cruising home to score by 4-1/4 lengths in 1:51.3. Catch My Passion (McClure) finished second, followed by Coueratout Du Lac (Roy), who was elevated to third.

Sugar Pie Honey ($2.70), a Millar Farms homebred trained by Nick Gallucci, is now five-for-12 lifetime.

No Angel Like Me ($19.10), driven by Scott Young, snagged it for owner/trainer/breeder Candice Morel.
