Check Out Canada's First Two-Year-Old Winner

TH Check Me Out winning at Woodbine Mohawk Park

Canada's first two-year-old winner of the season in pari-mutel racing action, pacing filly TH Check Me Out turned heads in her career debut on Friday, June 13 at Woodbine Mohawk Park.

Ready to roll off a 2:00.1 qualifying mile a week ago, TH Check Me Out won at first asking for trainer Blake MacIntosh, taking a $16,000 two-year-old filly pace in 1:54.2.

Driver Tyler Borth set out for the lead with 9-5 favourite TH Check Me Out from post five and cleared early leaver Brisk Seelster (Jody Jamieson) past the opening quarter, which was clocked in :28.4. Lainey Blu (Doug McNair) then swept up from mid-pack down the backstretch and took over at the half in :58. Brisk Seelster took aim as they raced to three-quarters in 1:27.3, but TH Check Me Out split rivals down the stretch and prevailed by three-quarters of a length, stepping home in :26.3. Brisk Seelster was second with Lainey Blu back in third.

The filly by Cattlewash is the first foal out of the Sportswriter mare, Sports Check, a full sister to Ontario Sires Stakes winners Sporting The Look and Sports Expert. Bred by Tara Hills Stud of Port Perry, Ont., TH Check Me Out was a $44,444 yearling purchase at the Standardbred Horse Sale by MacIntosh and partners Ozzie MacKay of Moncton, N.B., Gilles Landry of Dieppe, N.B., and James Giannuzzi of Fayetteville, New York.

Pop-Up Series action continued on Friday at Mohawk with a new event for pacing fillies and mares that are non-winners of $30,000 in 2025 in a minimum of 10 starts or starters for a purse of $12,000 or less in their last start. Trainer Des Takoor's Job Hunter ($11) out-sprinted her cover home to win the $16,000 opening leg in 1:53 in rein to Trevor Henry.

Another Pop-Up Series for $20,000 claiming pacers continued with its second round, split into two $15,000 divisions. Repeat winner Lil Sebastian ($5.40) lowered his lifetime mark again in the series, taking command midway down the backstretch and winning in 1:52.3 this time out for driver Scott Young and trainer Pam Forgie while Vis A Vis Bluechip ($5.30), who missed by just a neck in the opening leg, survived a first-over journey to take the other division in 1:52.2 with Tyler Jones aboard for the Kyle Fellows stable. This series is for male pacers that are non-winners of $60,000 (Ontario-sired $75,000) lifetime.
