Island Beach Boy Wins Ladner On Shortened CDP Card

Island Beach Boy winning at Charlottetown Driving Park

Island Beach Boy ($11.20) refused to be denied on the front end, winning the $9,000 Cecil Ladner Memorial, presented by Ladner Source for Sports, during a rain-shortened Saturday evening, June 7 card at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.

Driver/trainer Adam Merner sent Island Beach Boy straight to command from post one and set fractions of :28.2 and :58.2 with 4-5 favourite Roll Em (Marc Campbell) advancing first-up from third and matching strides at three-quarters in 1:26.3. Down the stretch, Island Beach Boy dug in gamely to fend off Roll Em by half a length in 1:54.3. Wind Blown (Paul Langille) completed the triactor.

Island Beach Boy, a seven-year-old Somebeachsomewhere-Lady Sometimes gelding with 24 career wins, is co-owned by Ian Smith of Stratford, P.E.I., and Arnold Hagen of Bible Hill, N.S.

Persistent heavy rain forced officials to cancel the last three races on the program after the first division of the Ladner was contested in race 12. The card was shortened for safety reasons due to driver visibility and lightening as another weather system hit Prince Edward Island.

Earlier on the program, trainer Jennifer Doyle continued her sizzling 2025 season, sending out a pair of winners. Middleton Terror ($3.20) paced to a front-end score in race six, winning in 1:53 with David Dowling in the bike for owners Kingsley Walsh and Frank Balcom. Later in race nine, Doyle and Dowling teamed up again with Almanac ($5.20), who sprinted to victory in 1:54.4 for owner Ryan McLaughlin.

Trainer Jeff Holmes also doubled up on the card, striking first in race 10 with Elroy Shiner ($3.50), who put up a 1:56 wire-to-wire win for driver Brady Sweet and owner Frank Sweet. Holmes returned to the winner’s circle after race 11 with Early Play ($11.20), who delivered a sharp closing rally in 1:57.2 with Brady Sweet again in the seat for owner Tommy Collings.

Live harness racing continues in P.E.I. on Tuesday, June 10 at 6 p.m. (ADT) at Red Shores Summerside.
