Grey Sea Great In Century Downs Preferred

Grey Sea

Nine mares lined up behind the car for the $16,000 Fillies & Mares Preferred Pace on Wednesday, May 28 at Century Downs with Grey Sea in the second tier from post nine, but, despite her draw, the mare went on to win at 11-1 odds.

Favoured Outlawguns N Roses (Mike Hennessy) left from the rail and Grey Sea (Nathan Sobey) followed her strides closely as the trailer. As Outlawguns N Roses posted fractions in :27.2, :57 and 1:24.3, Grey Sea was at her heels along the pylons. Turning for home, a match race ensued between the bettors' choice and the longshot. The race came down to the wire and Grey Sea did the better work by a fraction of a second, posting a :28.4 last panel to win by a neck in 1:53.3. Outlawguns N Roses had to settle for second and Beep Bop A Lula (David Kelly) completed the ticket for show.

Gord Abbott trains the Custard The Dragon-Preference six-year-old mare for owner/breeder Seaspray Stables Ltd. of Nanaimo, B.C. The grey mare won her second straight feature -- previously a Mares Open at the Fraser Downs meet on May 1 -- and third race of the year in 10 starts. In her 70-start career, Grey Sea has posted a record of 26-18-13 to go along with a $215,250 bankroll. She paid $23.30 to win.
