Dowling, Doyle Dominate Stakes Sunday At Summerside

A star-studded stakes card unfolded on Sunday afternoon, May 25 at Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway with top performances in Gold and Grassroots divisions of the P.E.I. Colt Stakes for three-year-old pacers headlined by a banner day for driver David Dowling and trainer Jennifer Doyle.
Dowling and Doyle started off their winning on the 15-dash program in race one as Elm Grove Talia ($2.10) delivered as the heavy favourite in a $10,500 Grassroots filly division in 2:00.2 over the 'good' track rated two seconds off. She is owned by Kingsley Walsh, Donald Walsh, Frank Balcom and Shane Baglole.
The duo also captured the lone $7,600 Gold division of the P.E.I. Colt Stakes Graduate Series, presented by Kays Wholesale, for older pacers in race 11 with Middleton Terror ($7.10) winning in 1:55 for owners Kingsley Walsh and Frank Balcom.
Like A King ($3.70) was the third Doyle-trained winner in line to Dowling with a 1:55.4 clocking in a $19,300 Gold colt division in race 13 for owner/breeder Jennifer Ritchie.
Dowling recorded other driving victories with a pair of first-time winners: Isle Bea Wickedwon ($9) in 2:00.3 in a $10,500 Grassroots filly division for trainer Ronnie Matheson and owner Everette Hanson, and Saulsbrook Bolt ($19.40) in 2:00.4 in a $9,650 Grassroots colt division for trainer George Rennison and co-owner Andrea Rennison.
Driver Marc Campbell teamed up with three different trainers to score three wins on the stakes-filled card, including Michael Clarey's homebred Bentley ($18.80) in 1:59.3 for trainer John Clarey and Clayton & Joseph McCombs' homebred Miramichi Charlie ($5) in a maiden-breaking 2:00.3 mile for trainer Danny Romo, both in $9,650 Grassroots colt splits. Campbell’s other win was with Mindbodyandsoul ($3.10) in a $21,000 Gold division for fillies in 1:58.3. That Earl Watts trainee is owned by Windemere Farms, Hollis Newson, Sterling Buchanan and Jack Quinn.
Joe Baxter doubled up from his Summerside operation, starting with Howmac Maleficent ($32.70) delivering a shocker in the $21,000 Gold filly split for driver Ken Murphy and owner Peter Garnet Gilby, capitalizing on breaks by both favourites to win in 1:59.4. Baxter and Murphy also won with Brian & Allison Ramsay's homebred Miss Believing ($6.80) in a $10,500 Grassroots division for fillies in 1:59.4.
Gilles Barrieau had two driving wins with Im Sir Scarlet ($2.10) in 1:59.2 in a $9,650 Grassoots colt division for trainer Darryl MacLean, who co-owns with Gordon MacLean and Stephen Downey, and Steady Heart ($7.30) in 1:58.4 in a $10,500 Grassoots filly division for trainer Bo Ford, who shares ownership with Arnold Myers, Luke Beck and Scott Bridges.
Paul Langille drove a pair of winners including Douglas R. & Douglas E. Polley's homebred Brookdale Layton ($4.70) in a 2:00.3 score in a $9,650 Grassroots colt division for trainer Bernard McCallum. Langille's own trainee Malevolent ($4.10) capped off the day with a front-end 1:56.4 victory in the $19,300 Gold division for colts. The winner is owned by Debbie Francis and Rosanne Langille.
Rosetown Mary ($8.70) surged late to win the $7,600 P.E.I. Colt Stakes Graduate Series Mares Gold division, presented by JD Marine and Diving Inc., in 1:58.3 for trainer/driver Corey MacPherson and owners Rosetown Stable and Taylor MacPherson.
Live harness racing continues on Thursday at 6 p.m., at Red Shores Charlottetown featuring Grassroots divisions of the P.E.I. Colt Stakes Graduate Series.
