Tobins Brownie gained early control of the field in the $4,200 Fillies and Mares Preferred 3 Pace at Red Shores at the Charlottetown Driving Park on Thursday, May 15 and she never looked back as she won in a photo finish at the wire.

Marc Campbell and the Earl Watts student left alertly from the gate in post four and achieved the lead swiftly. The pair eased through splits in :27.3, :57.4 and 1:27.3 before bracing for the challenge by favoured Sugar Bowl (Gilles Barrieau). Tobins Brownie powered through the challenge and prevailed at the wire by a nose in 1:55.4. Plain Jane (Brady Sweet) rounded out the top three. 

 

Brittany Watts and Sandra Weeks co-own the seven-year-old Stonebridge Terror-Putnam Mackenzie mare, who won her first start this year. In 119 career starts, Tobins Brownie has banked $213,595 with 38 trips to the winner's circle. She paid $5.30 as the second choice in the field at 2-1.

Buckhead Ridge was unheeded on his way to the winner’s circle in the Thursday evening trotting feature.

The five-year-old son of Nuncio-Tuonela eased through splits of :28.3, :58 and 1:27.4 in the $4,000 featured trot before closing out the mile in 1:56.4 for driver Gilles Barrieau. He paid $2.90 on the nose as the betting favourite. The Landon Campbell trainee was one-fifth off the overall male trotting record of 1:56.3 co-held by Mile Hill Willie and Freddie. New Legacy (David Dowling) finished second and Final Text (Marc Campbell) was third.

Brady Doyle holds the ownership papers on Buckhead Ridge. 

Trainer Landon Campbell doubled up as Downbytheeastside ($2.10) was a 1:57.3 winner in a maiden-breaking effort in race two in line to Marc Campbell for owners Brady Doyle and Chuckie Symes.

Promise Me Later ($2.10) won her fourth straight in the race 10 finale with a 1:56.1 clocking for driver David Dowling, trainer Jennifer Doyle and owners Kingsley Walsh, Frank Balcom and Sam Walsh.

Doyle and Dowling celebrated earlier on the program with three-year-old pacing filly Elm Grove Talia ($19) in a new lifetime best of 1:55 for owner Sam and Kingsley Walsh, Balcom and Shane Baglole.

Live harness racing continues on Saturday, May 17 at 6 p.m., at Red Shores Charlottetown while Red Shores Summerside holds their season opener on Victoria Day Monday, May 19 at 1 p.m.
