Outlawguns N Roses, the local track record holder and Alberta’s 2024 Horse of the Year, captured the $16,000 Fillies & Mares Preferred Pace with a strong late move on Wednesday, May 7 at Century Downs, adding another impressive win to her résumé.
Heavy 4-5 favourite Outlaw Sharktastic (Nathan Sobey) set the early tempo, holding off Goodbye Ceia Later (Brandon Campbell), who tried but failed to clear through a brisk :26.2 opening quarter. Beep Bop A Lula (David Kelly) launched a first-over bid approaching the midway mark, with Outlawguns N Roses and driver Mike Hennessy tracking her cover closely.
After a half in :55.2, Beep Bop A Lula pressed the pace around the final turn, reaching three-quarters in 1:24.1. Outlawguns N Roses swept three wide and powered past both rivals, drawing clear for a 1:53.2 victory. Pirate Booty (Terry Kaufman) closed for second, while Daisy Corvette (Logan Gillis) finished third. A $2 win ticket on the winner returned $6.90.
The four-year-old daughter of Captive Audience–Gunslingin Gal is trained by Rod Starkewski, who co-owns with Clauzette Byckal of Onoway, Alta. This was her first win of the 2025 season and 16th career victory, boosting her seasonal earnings to $12,030 and career total to $392,840.
Trainer Travis Ellis recorded a training triple on the card , teaming up with Hennessy for victories with Rison Star ($3.20), Sunshinatthebeach ($13.90), and Baby Badger ($4.20) to close out the night.
Ellis now sits at 24 wins for the 2025 season, including 10 wins at Century Downs, placing him second on the local leaderboard. With Wednesday’s success, his seasonal earnings climbed to $118,568, while his career total now stands at $1,228,292.
