Allegra Hanover Wins Bobby Weiss Series Final

Allegra Hanover emerged victorious in the $69,444 Bobby Weiss Series Championship for three-year-old pacing fillies on Monday, May 5 at Pocono Downs at Mohegan Pennsylvania.

The daughter of Papi Rob Hanover–Arodasi entered the final with two wins and a narrow nose loss in preliminary action. That lone defeat came at the hands of Strutsville—the only filly to sweep all three of her Weiss prelims.

But in Monday’s final, the post draw flipped the script. Allegra Hanover (pictured above) had the inside post, while Strutsville was marooned in post seven—a reversal from their last encounter. The wagering public took note, making Allegra Hanover the favourite, and she didn’t disappoint, delivering a decisive 1:52.2 victory over her chief rival.

Sweet Odds (also a two-time prelim winner) and Strutsville were quickest off the gate, with the latter taking early command. But driver Dexter Dunn wasted no time moving Allegra Hanover off the pylons, sending her to the lead past a :27.4 opening quarter. Once on top, Allegra Hanover dictated terms through a half in :56.2 and three-quarters in 1:24.1, facing no serious threats until the stretch.

Strutsville launched a first-over bid while Sweet Odds looked to capitalize from the pocket, but Allegra Hanover stayed strong, fending off her rivals to win by a length over Strutsville. Sweet Odds finished another 1-1/2 lengths behind in third.

Although she had just one win as a two-year-old, that victory came in a career-best 1:51.3. Now, Allegra Hanover is four-for-five on the year (with that lone nose defeat) and looks poised to lower her lifetime mark soon. She is trained by Gareth Dowse and owned by Martin Valentic, T G Stable LLC, and Bill Boyce.

In the $27,778 Weiss Consolation, Beckoning Yankee—a daughter of Tall Dark Stranger–A Beach Cowgirl—shaved her personal best to 1:53.2. She took the lead in front of the stands and held off the fast-finishing Milagro by a head for the win. Nifty Norman conditions the filly for Pinske Stables, Yankeeland Partners LLP, and Lawrence Means.

Red-hot reinsman Tyler Buter, Pocono’s leading driver, guided Beckoning Yankee to victory and added four wins on the Monday afternoon card. Coupled with a six-win performance on Sunday night, Buter racked up 10 wins in just 24 hours.

Racing continues Tuesday at 1 p.m. to wrap up the current four-day weekly schedule. The featured $16,000 USD claiming handicap trot in Race 10 will showcase the return of the remarkable Chapolier, who is a perfect eight-for-eight at the Pocono meet. He’ll look to keep his undefeated 2025 record intact despite drawing the outside post eight.

Looking ahead, Saturday marks the start of the Pennsylvania state-bred stakes season, as the Pennsylvania All-Stars take center stage with five $30,000 USD divisions for the “glamour boys,” the three-year-old pacing colts.
