Logan Park Stays Sharp In Mohawk Preferred

Two-time O'Brien Award winner Logan Park continues to gear up impressively for Sweden’s prestigious Elitloppet, capturing his second straight $36,000 Preferred Trot at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Monday, April 21.

Ghostly Casper (Tyler Borth) was quickest off the gate, with Quebec Hanover (Louis-Philippe Roy) settling into the pocket and 1-5 favourite Logan Park dropping into third early with Doug McNair in the bike. The opening quarter flashed up in :26.4. Moving down the backstretch, McNair launched Logan Park and quickly cleared to the front, cutting the half in :55.3 and the three-quarters in 1:25.1.

Around the final turn, Gaines Hanover (Bob McClure) came calling and drew even with the leader, but Logan Park dug in gamely down the lane to fend off the challenge and win in 1:53 by a neck. Gaines Hanover made it interesting late but had to settle for second, while New Rules (Trevor Henry) got up for third.

A model of consistency, Logan Park rarely deviates from form. However, Monday’s effort marked a slight change—he raced off Lasix for the first time since 2021, a required adjustment for his upcoming trip to Sweden, where Lasix is not permitted.

The seven-year-old gelded son of Archangel out of Rite Outa The Park is trained by Kyle Fellows and co-owned by Outofthepark Stable of Rockwood, Ont., Reg Higgs of Blenheim, Ont., and Arpad Szabo of Bradford, Ont. This victory was the 38th of his career, and it pushed his lifetime earnings to $2,045,432.

Also on the card were three divisions of leg two of the $10,000 Pop-Up Series for horses and geldings that are non-winners of $7,500 in 2025 or not averaging $900 per start in 2024 or 2025.

In the first division, Vino Louie ($18.80) delivered a 1:53 upset with Louis-Philippe Roy driving for trainer Malik Smith. In the next division, Dirty Lil Piglet ($3.20) scored in 1:54.2 for driver James MacDonald and trainer Des Tackoor. The final division went to Nightime Dancer ($6), who powered to a 1:53 win, another James MacDonald winner, this time for trainer Rod Boyd.

The card closed with the second leg of the $14,000 Pop-Up Series for non-winners of $15,000 (fillies and mares $18,750) in 2025 or not averaging $1,400 (fillies and mares $1,750) per start in 2024 or 2025.

Phoenix ($2.70) delivered the goods in 1:56 for driver Bob McClure and trainer Julie Walker.
