Northfield Park 'Super Sizes' Its High 5 Wager

Harness racing at Northfield Park

Beginning on Tuesday, March 4, MGM Northfield Park will debut its “super-sized” Super High 5s by offering four 10-horse fields per card every Tuesday and Wednesday with 20-cent Super High 5 wagering offered on all four of the races.

In cooperation with the Ohio Harness Horsemen’s Association (OHHA) and local horsepeople, Northfield will change its wagering menu nightly beginning on Tuesday. The popular 20-cent Super High 5 wager will now be offered four times per card, on Races 1, 7, 10 and 13.  Full 10-horse fields will be slotted in those races on Tuesday and Wednesday nights whenever the horse population permits. Northfield will pay every starter in the race if all 10 go to the gate.

The 20-cent Super High 5 (also known as a Pentafecta) requires the player to select the top five finishers in a given race in order. If no one selects all five correctly, Northfield pays a 25 per cent consolation payoff to patrons with the highest number of correct selections and the other 75 per cent of the pool will be carried over to the next Super High 5 race. Northfield’s Super High 5 has a low 14 per cent takeout rate.

"Our horsemen wanted to know what they could do to increase handle and visibility for Northfield. We told them there is nothing more popular than full fields and carryovers. Hopefully the full-field High 5s will produce some carryovers and sizeable payouts," said Dave Bianconi, Northfield’s Director of Racing. "We are excited that our local horsemen and the OHHA are eager to partner with us on this promotion."

Northfield’s March racing schedule is every Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday at 6 p.m. The new wagering menu (adding Super High 5s and dropping Superfectas on Races 7 and 10) will go into effect on Tuesday. The 10-horse “super-sized” fields will only be drawn for Tuesdays and Wednesdays, but even Saturday and Sunday nights will feature the same wagering format with nine-horse fields in those four High 5 races.
