Spitfire Oversees Lights The Fire In Mohawk Feature

Spitfire Oversees and driver James MacDonald were in top form on Monday, Feb. 24, dominating the $24,000 high-end conditioned trot at Woodbine Mohawk Park.

In the Race 7 feature, Royalty Beer (Tyler Jones) was determined to reach the front from the nine-hole, setting a sharp opening quarter in :29, with 2-5 favourite Spitfire Oversees tucked in the pocket. As they rounded the first turn, MacDonald made his move, giving Spitfire Oversees the cue. The gelding responded, tipping to the outside and powering to the lead with authority. By the half, they were in control, reaching the marker in :58.2 and continuing strong through three-quarters in 1:26.3.

As the field entered the stretch, Spitfire Oversees began to pull away, clearing the competition and holding steady to win by 1-1/2 lengths in 1:55.4 over a 'good' track. Royalty Beer was a hard-fought second, while Drebin (Jonathan Drury) rounded out the top three.

Spitfire Oversees, a five-year-old gelded son of International Moni out of Legal Lady, is trained by Dominic Gladu for Thestable Spitfireovrsees of Guelph, Ont. This victory marked career win 19 for the gelding, who has now increased his lifetime earnings to $383,173. In the 2025 season alone, Spitfire Oversees has secured three wins, bringing his seasonal earnings to $32,575.

MacDonald recorded four wins on the 10-race card, bringing his lifetime total to 3,998, just two wins shy of the prestigious 4,000 milestone.
