River Lass Toys With Alberta Open Mares
River Lass had her leading margin up to the double digits by the half and there was no catching her the rest of the way in the featured $8,500 Fillies & Mares Open Pace contested over a 'good' surface at Alberta Downs on Sunday
afternoon.
River Lass fired to command from post four in the six-horse field and opened up five lengths on her foes by the :30.2 opening quarter mark. She had her lead up to 10 by the half in :59.2 and was on cruise control the rest of the way. She hit three-quarters in 1:28.3 and turned for home with the field beginning to catch up, but her nearest rival was still three lengths back at the wire in 1:59.4. Shoplifter Hanover (Jamie Gray) finished second with early trailer Barona Josie (Bill Tainsh Jr.) coming on to show.
Trainer-driver Kelly Hoerdt co-owns the $270,000-plus earning As Promised-Brass Buttons mare with fellow Beaumont resident Blair Corbeil. The odds-on favourite paid $4.10 to win for the 20th time.
River Lass has won half of her eight starts this season while never missing a paycheque along the way for over $22,000 in earnings.
