A short field of six lined up for the $36,000 Preferred Trot on Monday, Feb. 10 at Woodbine Mohawk Park, where New Rules and Doug McNair emerged victorious.
Early speed came from Quebec Hanover (Louis-Philippe Roy), but it was 6-5 favourite Amigo Volo (James MacDonald) who took command, leading the field through a :28 opening quarter. The field remained in a single-file formation heading to the half, clocked in :57.2, with O'Brien Award runner-up Amigo Volo still in control.
Approaching the final turn, New Rules and his catch driver, Doug McNair, launched the first challenge. Amigo Volo held his ground, reaching three-quarters in 1:26.3. In the stretch, a battle ensued, but New Rules had more in reserve, surging past to score a decisive 1:55.1 victory by 2-3/4 lengths. Amigo Volo fought gamely to hold second while Quebec Hanover finished third.

The gelding notched his second Preferred win of the season, bringing his record to three wins out of four starts in 2025. With this victory, his career total rises to 19 wins, and his lifetime earnings increase to $345,862. He returned $6.70 to win.
