Makayla Renee Lavery Passes
Makayla Renee Lavery passed away on Jan. 26, 2025 at the age of 24.
Makayla was a Michigan native, born April 27, 2000 to JoAnne Lavery and Otis McLeod.
Makayla made her home in Northfield, Ohio where she met the love of her life and beloved partner, Derik Scott, with whom she was excited to begin their family, as she was expecting their first child, Derik Cyrus Scott.
Makayla was a third generation horsewoman who got her start in harness racing at a young age. Growing up, she spent more time at the farm and racetracks than she did anywhere else. She took great pride in her work and her love for the horses that she cared for was evident for everyone to see. Makayla’s goofiness and lighthearted enthusiasm will be greatly missed in the harness racing community.
Makayla lived her life wide open and on her own terms; she was unafraid and unapologetic. She was the type of girl you were lucky to have in your corner. She was fiercely loyal to her family and friends and would never hesitate to stand up for someone in need. Her spirit was infectious, her big beautiful smile could be seen from a mile away, and her deep belly laugh left its imprint on the hearts of so many. She had a way of finding joy regardless of circumstance.
Makayla was preceded in death by her father Otis McLeod and grandfather James Lavery.
She is survived by her mother JoAnne Lavery; grandmothers Linda Lavery and Sharon Miller; sisters Desaray Lavery, Sierra McLeod, Kenya Williams, Taya Burrag; brothers Tyrese Lavery, Otis McLeod, Curtis McLeod, Anthony McLeod; aunts Julie Zell, Helen Miller, Ladonna Lane, Sabrina Horn, Ebony McLeod; uncles Jerome Miller, Calvin Miller, Lindsay Horn; cousins Dylan Lavery, Morgan Zell, Ava Lavery, Easton Lavery, Beau Morefield; nephew Kaiden Lavery; and countless friends who were like family.
Friends may call at The Ferfolia Funeral Home, 356 West Aurora Roag (OH RT 82), Sagamore Hills for visitation on Monday, Feb. 3 from 2-6 p.m. Makayla’s funeral services will immediately follow at 6 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the family which will assist in covering expenses for her siblings until they’re able to return to work.
