Five For Fillion, Royalty Beer Wins Western Fair Preferred

It was a big night for Sam Fillion on Monday, Jan. 27 at The Raceway at Western Fair District, as he notched five driving wins, including a victory in the $12,000 Preferred Trot with Royalty Beer.

Royalty Beer, a six-year-old gelding by Royalty For Life out of Beer Maggs, was a dominant wire-to-wire winner in the Race 10 feature for Fillion. After setting fractions of :28.1, 1:00, and 1:29.4, the pair powered home to win by 2-1/2 lengths in 2:00.2. Treasured Tee (Travis Henry) finished second, while favourite Marvin Hagler (Austin Sorrie) took third.

The homebred trotter, who is trained by Jean-Francois Maguire for owner Ecuries Maguire, paid $4.20 to win as the second choice. Royalty Beer is now a perfect four-for-four this year. The gelding has 22 lifetime victories and boasts career earnings of $344,227.

Fillion kicked off and wrapped up the night with winners, starting with Shesundertheradar ($21.90) for trainer Ashley Lendvoy, followed by victories in Race 4 with St Lads Mischief ($8.70) for John Kennedy, Race 5 with Run Like Hill ($7.50) for trainer Francis Guillemette, and closing out the 11-race card with Coming Fashion ($5.00) for Pam Forgie.

In 2024, Fillion had an outstanding season, posting career-high numbers, including 309 wins and $2,095,450 in earnings. Fillion is off to a strong start this season, with $197,447 in purse earnings as well as taking over the lead in the 2025 Canadian driver standings with his five-win performance. He now leads 32-30 over Austin Sorrie, who drove a pair of winners on Monday.
