Nova Scotia Funding For Northside Downs
The Province of Nova Scotia announced on Wednesday, Jan. 8 that it will be providing funding for infrastructure improvements to Northside Downs, a community hub for harness racing and recreation in North Sydney.
Northside Downs is managed by Harness Racing Cape Breton Inc., which will be receiving $1 million to improve training grounds and recreation barns and enhance accessibility features. The investment is part of the Province's accessibility strategy, Access by Design 2030, with the goal of providing people with disabilities equitable access to programs, services, information and infrastructure.
“These upgrades reflect the Province’s commitment to improving recreational infrastructure and accessibility,” said Public Works Minister Fred Tilley, MLA for Northside-Westmount, on behalf of Dave Ritcey, Minister of Communities, Culture, Tourism and Heritage. “Northside Downs is a vital part of our community, and these improvements will ensure it continues to thrive as a space for everyone to enjoy.”
“The board of directors of Harness Racing Cape Breton is very excited with the addition of an elevated, accessible viewing deck for our spectators," said Joel LeBlanc, a member of the management team at Harness Racing Cape Breton. "This project will enhance the visitor experience for a number of our patrons, providing tremendous sightlines and cover from the weather for our events. The support of the Department of Communities, Culture, Tourism and Heritage is greatly appreciated.”
Northside Downs will host 27 race dates during its 2025 harness racing season, which is scheduled to begin on May 10 and run through Nov. 15.
