Control The Power Takes New Mark In Pop-Up Final

Control The Power winning at Woodbine Mohawk Park

Control The Power established a new lifetime mark of 1:51.3 as he powered to victory in Friday's featured $30,000 final of a Pop-Up Series at Woodbine Mohawk Park.

This Pop-Up Series was for male pacers that were non-winners of $30,000 or not averaging $1,500 per start in a minimum of 15 starts this year.

Overlooked at odds of 8-1 following his victory in the second leg of the series last Friday night, Control The Power took control of the field from post nine with a :26.3 opener and widened to an insurmountable lead by headstretch for driver Travis Cullen. The six-year-old gelding won by 4-1/4 lengths at the end, shaving one-fifth of a second off his lifetime mark. He returned $18.30 for the mild upset. Howmac Maximus (Damian MacLellan) and HF Pans Shadow (Ed Hensley), each with one victory apiece in the preliminary legs, closed well for the minor spoils.

Jodie Cullen trains Control The Power, a homebred son of Control The Moment out of the Camluck mare Power Outage, for owner David Snowden. The pacer now has 16 career wins with earnings topping the $150,000 mark from 86 starts.

A pair of Pop-Up Series consolations were decided in the final strides with trainer Des Tackoor's Bettor Than Pride ($4.90) and driver Trevor Henry catching leaders Better Be Gouda (James MacDonald) and Foxhunt (Bob McClure) in 1:53 to win the $15,000 Consolation 1 while Time To Dancing ($17.30) and trainer/driver Stephane Pouliot shook loose late and held off Beyond Better (J.R. Plante) to take the $12,000 Consolation 2 in 1:55.1.
