Serving Up Holiday Spirit In Clinton
For the second straight year, individuals connected with Clinton Raceway and the harness racing industry have ensured that the spirit of the holiday season is alive and well in the southwestern Ontario town.
On Wednesday, Dec. 25, Clinton Raceway will host its second annual Central Huron Community Christmas Dinner at the Libro Hall in the Central Huron Community Complex. The event, which will run from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., offers a free holiday meal to those in need and anyone who may be spending Christmas alone.
The idea for the Christmas dinner followed race day fundraising efforts at the racetrack over the summer racing season. Recognizing a need within the community, the team at Clinton Raceway reached out to local businesses and organizations, all of whom agreed to help make this vision a reality. Clinton Raceway spearheaded the event, with longtime racing industry participants Mark Johnston and Brad Hymers taking the lead in organizing much of the effort.
In 2023, the event served over 300 meals — 225 in person and 75 delivered to local hospitals, shelters, and hospice care centres.
“The response in 2023 was phenomenal," Michelle Maloney, Controller at Clinton Raceway told Trot Insider. "The community quickly jumped on board with the initiative, and we had an overwhelming number of volunteers come forward wanting to be a part of the event. Everyone that was in attendance that day raved about the positive experience. Community donations far exceeded expectations, and we were able to donate nearly $5,000 towards six schools in Central Huron nutrition programs.”
Encouraged by last year’s success, Clinton Raceway has made several improvements for the 2024 edition of the Central Huron Community Christmas Dinner. This year, they are focusing on ensuring that all those who would like to attend the event, whether for a warm meal or simply for companionship, know they are welcome. The event will also extend its support to local first responders, with meals being delivered to ambulance crews and OPP officers working on Christmas Day.
The team behind the event is preparing to serve 450 meals this year, a significant increase from 2023. Tickets for the event were made available over a three-week period in November and were quickly claimed.
“I enjoy being a part of this event...it's a wonderful feeling seeing the entire community want to get involved,” continued Maloney. “The chatter throughout the community is very positive about the event, and so many are so appreciative! Last year, it was so great to see so many people enjoying a warm Christmas dinner, listening to live Christmas music, and enjoying social interactions on a day where they would otherwise be alone.”
Donations for the event are being accepted and can be made via e-transfer, cash, or cheque to Clinton Raceway. All proceeds will benefit nutrition programs at local schools, helping to provide food for students in need.
