Safe Conduct Records First Preferred Win At Mohawk
Safe Conduct has found his way in the Preferred Handicap Trot ranks at Woodbine Mohawk Park since late October and on Monday, Dec. 2, the Camilla Christoforou pupil notched his first victory in the $36,000 top class.
Piloted by Chris Christoforou from post six, Safe Conduct chased the car early, getting himself in the shuffle of the early leavers. As the field flattened out, Fashion Frenzie (Louis-Philippe Roy) opened up on the lead with Safe Conduct in second and favoured Amigo Volo (James MacDonald) in third. The quarter read :28 and half clicked :56.3 before the field tightened up, still single file behind Fashion Frenzie. Just before the 1:25.4 three-quarters, Safe Conduct popped the pocket and nearing the wire, he breezed past the pacesetter to win by 2-1/2 lengths in 1:53.2. Amigo Volo nabbed second, leaving Fashion Frenzie with the show spot.
Charalambos Christoforou co-owns the five-year-old gelded son of Archangel out of the Muscle Hill mare Safekeeping with Irvann Holdings Inc. Safe Conduct won his third race of the year from 15 starts, putting his seasonal earnings just shy of $100,000. In his career, the trotter has recorded a tally of 9-10-8 with $431,120 banked in 42 starts. As the 3-1 third choice, he paid $7.90 to win.
